Screen Producers Australia (SPA) CEO Matthew Deaner is stepping down after 14 years with the organisation, with Zoe Angus appointed Acting Executive Director while the council considers its next steps.

SPA announced Deaner’s departure on Tuesday, paying tribute to his leadership and contribution to the Australian screen production industry, including his role in advocating for local content requirements on global streaming platforms.

During his tenure, Deaner helped strengthen SPA’s engagement with government and industry stakeholders, expand member services and develop initiatives such as the Ones to Watch pathway program.

He also oversaw the relaunch and expansion of SCREEN FOREVER, Australia’s largest screen conference and market.

His work included advocacy for increased funding for the ABC, an increase in the television production offset to 30% and the protection of the film offset at 40%.

He also played a leading role in SPA’s campaign for local content obligations on streaming services, which contributed to policy reform designed to support Australian stories and screen production.

SPA Council President Tracey Vieira said Deaner’s leadership and persistence had helped advance the interests of Australian producers.

“Among Matt’s many achievements, his leadership and persistence in advocating for local content obligations on streaming services will leave a lasting legacy for Australian producers and the broader screen industry.”

“At a time of profound industry change, he helped ensure Australian stories remained firmly on the national agenda.”

Deaner said it had been a privilege to lead the organisation and work alongside Australia’s screen production community.

“After 14 years of what’s been both a very rewarding and equally intense role, it’s time for the next iteration of our organisation and for me to pursue other opportunities.”

SPA said Angus had agreed to serve as Acting Executive Director, providing continuity while arrangements for the organisation’s next chapter are progressed.
