Tonight, viewers tuning into NBN News will be greeted by a very different evening schedule, with the station’s revamped lineup making its on air debut.

The long running one hour local bulletin has been reduced to 30 minutes and shifted to an earlier timeslot, marking the latest chapter in the broadcaster’s transformation under WIN ownership.

From tonight, Monday June 29, NBN News moves to 5.30pm for a new 30 minute local bulletin presented by Natasha Beyersdorf. The Sydney edition of 9News, presented by Peter Overton, follows at 6.00pm, while A Current Affair continues in its regular 7.00pm timeslot.

The changes complete the overhaul announced after WIN acquired NBN from Nine, following months of newsroom restructuring and programming changes. They also follow the recent end of the station’s locally produced weekend bulletins, which have now been replaced by interstate editions.

The revised schedule also sees Tipping Point move to the earlier 4.30pm timeslot, bringing NBN’s evening lineup into line with WIN’s other regional markets and creating two hours of news and current affairs from 5.30pm each weeknight.

Alongside the new lineup, NBN has appointed Olivia Dillon as State News Director. Dillon joined the Newcastle newsroom as Chief of Staff and News Editor at the end of 2023 before stepping into the leadership role.

In announcing her appointment, NBN said Dillon had demonstrated strong leadership and a commitment to regional journalism during her time with the newsroom.

“Olivia will champion the future of NBN News, driving it forward into its next chapter.”

The new lineup also follows the departure of veteran presenter Jane Goldsmith, who anchored her final NBN News bulletin last Thursday after 25 years covering the Hunter and Northern NSW.

In a post to social media, Goldsmith thanked viewers for their support and encouraged them to continue backing her former colleagues, with former NBN presenter Gavin Morris echoing that message as he urged the community to stand by the newsroom.

  1. And believe me in northern NSW and Newcastle were not happy about the decisions made by a bunch of southerners

  2. I just hope the branding remains the same. God knows what the reaction will be if it is ever changed to WIN News in future.

    • It is going to change. The NBN News name (and local studio production in Newcastle) is sticking around in the short term. It will eventually be consolidated to Wollongong and rebranded into WIN News (and anchored by Bruce Roberts) in the not-too-distant future. It’s going to happen.

    • Sue Williams, welcome to life as endured by those in the rest of Regional Australia at the hands of WIN Corporation.

      • Nick Shelley it’s dreadful isn’t it? NSW doesn’t exist outside of Sydney unfortunately 😔

      • Sue Williams, I think it’s worth remembering that it was actually the Sydney-based Nine Network that left NBN alone and resourced it well to cover news well in the Northern NSW region.

It’s been a decision made at WIN in Wollongong (ie. another part of regional NSW) which has resulted in the local bulletins being cut back.

  3. The Gordon’s are bad for TV and Rugby League. They invite Sky After Dark into the homes of rural Australia ensuring enshitification of life forever more.

  4. I’ll be watching and supporting the local news then changing channels at 6pm when the Sydney news comes on.

  5. Disgraceful WIN, you have left us high and dry. Newcastle and the Hunter and Mid North Coast have a large regional viewing, we won’t watch your so called 6pm nightly news as our area doesn’t even get a mention. Hope you enjoy bad ratings because you have angered a lot of loyal viewers

    • Just like you to know that it affects we northerners as far north a the GOLD COAST” – Just thought I would mention that small FACT – AND just an aside NSW stands for Newcastle Sydney Wollongong — Anything that happens outside that doesn’t matter !!!! – Peace to ALL !!!!

  6. Population growth and a significant reduction in service… poor form… news flash, we are not part of the Sydney bubble.

    • Bruce Richardson follow Gavin he does a weather report every day, but did mention he may need support to keep it going, he’s a good guy

  7. The whole revamp of NBN News is an absolute disgrace – the weekend news was an insult to the people living in Newcastle and the regions to the north including the Hunter – Mid North Coast and New England – no content for those regions at all –

    • You do realise the Mid North Coast, Far North Coast, Northern Rivers and New England regions all still have 7NEWS local bulletins at 6pm, right? 7NEWS New England (Tamworth) and 7NEWS Coast (Mid North Coast, Far North Coast, Northern Rivers).

So there is still fully local content in some parts of NNSW, you just have to look elsewhere on TV.

  8. I’m not sure if I like the idea of having it at 5:30 because most people are not even home from work yet

  9. Will not be watching the news at 5.30, put it back where it bloody belongs. Would like to meet the bastards who made these changes, face to face. 😡😡

  10. I will watch then to Channel 7 , for News ..Will not support 9 and Win for doing that to us ..Its so Ridiculous. The second biggest City in NSW.

    • Well that could’ve been because Nine were trying to get as much money as possible to retain the NRL TV broadcast rights. And well, turns out, offloading the NBN and Nine Darwin stations to WIN might’ve just paid off for Nine, as they are apparently going to be keeping the NRL TV rights. In the sale to WIN and how much Nine’s regional stations were worth when they were sold: $15 million for NBN NNSW, $500,000 for Nine Darwin.

Nine had a choice of either keeping the NRL TV rights or keeping NBN NNSW and Nine Darwin. Nine chose the former, and now NNSW suffers. Newcastle will end up being Wollongong, but bigger.

  11. What about the country people that like to watch Todd ???. If the country news is coming on at 5.30 😤

    • BT Coight If the government does something some people will say they are interfering with the media. Damned if they do damned if they don’t. Maybe it’s up to the local people to turn off when local news is finished. Show them we are not happy.

  12. Most people will miss that time as it is to early for workers , Sad that after so many years of loyal followers will have to switch to other channels to listen to our local news.🥲

    • WIN won’t do that. If you look at places like Ballarat e.g, they don’t have a weekend local bulletin. And even then, they are already getting a single statewide bulletin for Regional VIC (disguised as a Western VIC bulletin), apart from the local weather segment at the end which remains.

The same scenario is bound to happen in NNSW, probs sooner rather than later, if not tonight.

    • Probably will be a single statewide bulletin for NNSW.
Will be watching the Newcastle and Lismore bulletins closely.

  13. It’s absolutely bloody awful. The news WAS NOT BROKEN, so therefore, it DIDN’T NEED FIXING. WIN is just a whole heap of fat cats in their plump little offices, not having ANY IDEA what NBN viewers need. I think ppl should jump on board with Gavin.

  14. What a joke. Watched the Saturday Sydney produced news, no Newcastle, Hunter or Northern NSW news. Maybe the 5:30pm weekly bulletin will be better. Couldn’t bear to watch the 6:00 pm channel 9 news again. Maybe the channel 7 news at 6:00 will be better. Don’t think it’s rocket science, the old 6:00pm NBN news, even with its Nine content, had most locals who watched free to air hooked for the night. Thought commercial TV was about the advertising dollar; guess WIN didn’t count on most locals shifting to another network.

  15. 7NEWS Regional in Tamworth, Coffs Harbour, Taree/Port Macquarie and Lismore are about to see a huge boom in the 6pm ratings on weeknights now, many of them probs being ex-NBN viewers sampling the 7NEWS offering and then perhaps (if they like it) sticking around for the CBN Canberra-produced 7NEWS@6:30 national bulletin (only seen in Riverina, Central West, New England and Coast markets – Albury gets a cut-down 7NEWS Melbourne instead following THEIR local 6pm weeknight bulletin).

What becomes WIN’s loss ends up being Seven’s gain. And by a huge margin.
Even if just on weeknights now.
