Seven Network’s 7plus is gearing up for a transformative 2024, outlining a suite of technological upgrades, exclusive content offerings, and revamped advertising solutions.

The platform’s renewed vision focuses on deepening user engagement and strengthening its foothold in the Australian streaming market.

7plus will soon incorporate user-experience improvements such as live pause, start over, rewind, and skip credits. Additionally, viewers can anticipate a more personalised interface complemented by picture-in-picture viewing. This suite of features is designed to ensure that both long-time and new users remain enthralled with the platform.

Gereurd Roberts, Chief Digital Officer of Seven West Media, conveyed his confidence in the platform’s trajectory, stating:

7plus is already the most advanced AVOD service in Australia and next year we will extend that lead, as we continue to build out our world-class product.

He emphasised that 7plus transcends traditional BVOD services and is carving out its niche with a three-pronged content approach encompassing live, on-demand, and FAST channels.

Highlighting the exclusivity of the platform, Roberts noted,

More than 70 per cent of the content on 7plus is exclusive to it and almost 60 per cent of all viewing comes from non-broadcast content.

He further celebrated their successes, mentioning the historic viewership records set by events like the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ Semi Final between the Matildas and England and the AFL Grand Final.

With 2024 in sight, the streaming service’s live content is expected to surge. In September, 7plus will secure full digital rights to the AFL. Following this, October will see the debut of cricket on the platform, marking a seminal moment as Australia’s premier winter and summer sports are made accessible, free of charge.

James Warburton, Managing Director and CEO of Seven West Media, expressed his enthusiasm, asserting:

The addition of AFL and cricket to 7plus will be the biggest game changer in the history of Australian streaming.

He projected that these additions would translate to four billion new viewing minutes annually on 7plus, likening this colossal number to the combined viewing time of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

On the advertising front, the streaming service is innovating with new offerings. Kurt Burnette, Chief Revenue Officer of Seven West Media, detailed their plans:

The new advertising products include dynamic live overlays, extending 7plus’ leadership with additional premium interactive ads, and more formats for non-intrusive sport and FAST channel commercialisation.

He emphasised the aim of enriching both the viewer and advertiser experience.

7plus boasts a rich catalogue of premium content, partnering with global giants like NBCUniversal, Disney, Fox, Sony Pictures, ITV Studios, and more. Their collaborative venture with NBCUniversal International Networks & Direct-to-Consumer has seen a 60 per cent quarter-on-quarter surge in viewership since its January inception.

Looking forward, Roberts tantalised with hints of what’s to come:

We have big plans to add even more premium, exclusive content to 7plus in 2024. Stay tuned.

The platform also plans to broaden its offering of market-leading FAST channels, prioritising local Australian content. Over 30 exclusive FAST channels feature beloved Australian shows such as Home and Away, Better Homes & Gardens, and Border Security.

Concluding, Roberts affirmed Seven’s pioneering position in the realm of FAST channels, noting the resonance of local content:

Great local content resonates the most with Australians, and over 70% of our viewed FAST content is premium Australian programming, with more than 90 per cent of this exclusive to 7plus.

Our focus on home-grown storytelling and Australian voices has enabled us to forge a deep connection with our audience, who value authenticity and relevance.
