The former Australian of the Year has made a decision about her future with the Government broadcaster.

Over the past week or so there has been some speculation in the media whether Ita Buttrose would seek to continue in her role of Chair of the ABC.

That question has been answered with the following press release from Communications Minister Michelle Rowland:

The Chair of the ABC, Ms Ita Buttrose AC OBE has advised the Government that she is not seeking reappointment following the completion of her current term in March 2024.

The Government acknowledges Ms Buttrose for her outstanding leadership of the national broadcaster since her appointment in March 2019.

Ms Buttrose brought renewed stability following a period of great organisational upheaval at the ABC. She has been a strong defender of the independence of the ABC, as well as a fierce advocate for the important role it plays in Australian society.

During Ms Buttrose’s term, the ABC has continued to be a trusted source of news, information and entertainment for all Australians, with adherence to strong governance in a rapidly changing media environment.

Under Ms Buttrose’s stewardship, the ABC has developed a new Five-Year Plan, championed greater inclusivity through efforts to introduce audio-description for blind and vision-impaired Australians, and furthered her career-long focus on boosting women’s representation in the media.

Ms Buttrose will remain the ABC Chair until her term expires on 6 March 2024.

The Government will begin a selection process to appoint the next Chair in due course.

The selection process will be conducted by the independent Nomination Panel for ABC and SBS appointments, supported by the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts, and an external executive search agency.

The Minister says:
“Ms Buttrose was the right Chair for the right time.

“Ms Buttrose is a formidable corporate leader who has served with distinction, speaking truth to power and upholding governance standards to protect independent public broadcasting.

“The Government respects Ms Buttrose’s decision and wishes her well for the remainder of her term and her future endeavours”.

  1. Good Riddance . you were put there to Equal Everything Up but some where on the way you turned into a Puppet..

  2. So she hasn’t quit. She has advised the Minister that she will serve out her term, and then retire.

I was hoping she was already done.

Let’s talk about who should replace her as Chairman.

  3. Quit is not the right word at all. She hasn’t tendered a resignation. She has elected not to extend her fixed term contract

  4. Ita was up against it from the start. Who would want to try & lead a bunch of far left loonies.

  5. About bloody time. Did sweet nothing to improve the ABC could not go any more left would fall off the edge.

  6. Thank goodness my only issue is that she was appointed by a conservative government what dickheads

  7. The ABC is one of the most trusted institutions in the country and rightfully so. Ita Buttrose did a good job during difficult times. At 81yo who would blame her if she retired.

Or it’s the sheltered workshop for the perpetually offended that a large portion of the country would like to see defunded and dissolved.

    • John Dale Polls have been taken and it is actually established that the ABC is one of the most trusted institutions in the country. I don’t dispute that there is also a proportion of the population who would like it gone.

What it shows is your propensity to follow the herd with your head in their arse without a critical thought about what you are seeing or where you are going.
All i can offer you is an appointment to get the next vaccine that will work this time.
I am sure the abc breakfast crew can instruct you to fit your mask properly and keep a safe distance from your fellow citizens while you drive down the freeway.

  8. Not her best performance not addressing the political favoritism that grew in her term.
Age is no excuse for avoiding necessary controls and focusing on impartial reporting.

  9. Yay, hiss off, you were queen bee leading a bunch of bull ant journos. Whole lot of abc a disgusting channel. Doubt they’ll change though regardless who takes over. Bavnt watched for years but always thought ita was overated.

  10. LOOKS LIKE THERE ARE A LOT OF RIGHT WING LOONIES STILL AROUND. They are the Criminals like the ones in the LNP.

  11. I woul like to think her replacement will be more centered, but my expectations of that are low.

  12. I woul like to think her replacement will be more centered, but my expectations of that are low.

  13. I woul like to think her replacement will be more centered, but my expectations of that are low.

    • Malcolm Bourne Murdoch would love that with the only media you can trust gone would give the LNP/Murdoch media total access to Spead their fake news.

    • Gary Suter oh no, not the Ruppie bogeyman!! Nah, we’re just all tired of the communist mouthpiece that is Their ABC. Shut it down.

    • Peter Moylan yep and he’s not here to “save”her.
I think that’s the politically correct expression nowadays.

  14. More bloody click bait. As much as I dislike the ABC, The woman is 81 years old and has said she will not seek to extend her contract, that is not resigning

  15. What a disappointment she has been.
The ABC was already floundering before her tenure. It’s nothing more than taxpayer funded socialist propaganda outlet.
Nothing balanced or diverse about their views or their lineup of presenters.

  16. How can anyone respect this thing when we have been subjected to such bias reporting of the ABC
The whole board needs to go as does all the senior management.
Clean sweep for the lot and start again.
Even better just get rid of the ABC, sell it and make them
    compete for their dollars.

    • John Wolfe. The whole board, except Laura Tingle, was appointed by the Coalition. The alleged bias is a myth held by brainwashed Murdoch minions.

    • Jeremy Stevenson. I haven’t seen any bias. The coverage is far more balanced than Sky. It’s like Sky is the propaganda arm of the Opposition.

    • Alice Helmers what dream world are you drawing breath from…certainly not the real world

    • Alice Helmers … that’s easy. Q&A stacked with Yes campaigners at the expense of a balanced argument. Ask me a difficult question next time Alice if you are capable.

    • Andrew Cobon-Kerr. I see you don’t watch the ABC but take Sky’s interpretation of what the ABC presents.

    • Correct … stopped watching the Communist station quite some time back, when it’s bias was obvious. Continues today with the support for the Voice even though it is a lost cause

  17. She hasn’t quit. She is just not extending past March 2024. Big difference. She has been a total disappointment.

  18. And that’s a good thing. I thought she would be great but she’s a dyed in the wool leftist.

  19. She pretended to be a conservative while it got her invited to the opening of an envelope. As soon as she entered the ABC the real woke cam out and how. She was always about her even when she wrote for the Women’s Weekley. Glad to see the end of her.

  20. See you later 👋 I can’t wait to see you getting locked away for selling fake propaganda to make more money . Don’t come back now

  21. She didn’t quit…she is seeing her contract out…no chance of being renewed by Labor….and no big payout for cancelling contract….

    • Mark Wells The ABC board currently are all Liberal appointed it would be natural for Labor to replace those whose contracts expire with less biased Board members. Must have been hard for the ABC reporters to resist the pressure to suppress all the goings on with the last government the most corrupt government we have had since Howard.

  22. Will there be a change to how they tell the truth, or will the fuddy duddies with no back bone continue to dictate how our money is spent.

  23. Funny how Ita quits!
She has done nothing to better the ABC she made it worse!
She knows sh is not water at the ABC so decided to go first!

  24. When Ita got the No one job at the ABC, I said good , she will turn the abc upside down and get rid of all the rubbish, what happened, it got worse, the ABC is a total waste of money, don,t watch or listen to any more, very disappointed with Ita, should be ashamed of herself, good ridence, me thinks.

  25. All she had to do was front press conferences & deny that the ALPBC was biased.
Even that was too much for her.

  26. Excellent. Put a man in charge that isn’t woke. Give us our ABC back. Bring back honesty and integrity. Time for the divisive emotionalists to be kicked to the kirb. We need truth tellers back in charge.

  27. We had such high hopes for her as a level headed leader of our national broadcaster, but she has been a total failure. In fact, a disgrace.

    • Col Oakley I have a personal view that she femanised and indiginised the ABC. Whether that is a good or a bad thing remains to be seen ????

  28. Article says: “Ms Buttrose brought renewed stability following a period of great organisational upheaval at the ABC. She has been a strong defender of the independence of the ABC, as well as a fierce advocate for the important role it plays in Australian society.

During Ms Buttrose’s term, the ABC has continued to be a trusted source of news, information and entertainment for all Australians, with adherence to strong governance in a rapidly changing media environment.”

Ratings drop says otherwise. No longer trusted source of news. Obvious bias more like it 😡

  29. Quits or is pushed ???? What ever its a bonus for the Australian taxpayers probably for a very short time till they find another LEFTIE to follow in her foot steps

  30. One of the worst leftie leader in the lefties media organisations in Australia.
    Another grub gone.
No wonder no one watches them , just sick of them using me taxes

  31. No great loss. She was supposed to sort it out all their partisanship. She did nothing except increase their budget

  32. Didn’t do much except paid a lot of taxpayer money. ABC still losing ratings so it’s a good indication of how well it has functioned under her shift. Good bye and stay away from publicly funded organisations. Hate seeing hard earned money wasted on pointless organisations and their management.

    • Russell Brauer The Australians Broadcasting Communism would never, ever have a conservative, they have been pumping marixst garbage for way too long to change now, that IS their narrative, socialism, marxism, communism! That is all they know.

And that is half the reason why so many stupid Australians vote the way they do, brainwashed morons. Lefties sugar coat EVERYTHING, and sell it very well as “A good thing” ….. But they never … ever tell you the other side! Ever .. why? Because you wouldn’t buy it if you knew the truth.

  33. Best news for a while coming out of the Australians Broadcasting Communism. Gee, is she going with denial andrews to live in China?

  34. Clear out the ABC completely and start over with a truly independent new service, void of politics!!! (as it should be)

  35. Chair of what? She did absolutely f,,,k all during her tenure. The next chair will probably be another Labor flunky so nothing will change.

  36. It is unbelievable how bias the ABC is..would make alot more sense to defund the ABC…it is a political movement not a news service..!!

  37. Unfortunately she’s been asleep at the wheel. The once proud broadcaster is now under her watch just a woke far left propaganda machine. Good riddance.

  38. This was a very good example of Australian unfairness and stupid maidship towards others who I.B. got this job.

  39. Should never been there . Morrison’s call . Stupid.
    Inclusive , now that’s a joke .
ABC the left biased public funded waste .

  40. It would appear that this site is also censored, i am unable to like some of the comments.. no surprises there..

  41. Good she was a terrible disappointment I hoped she would bring balance but it gets more bias every year

  42. So she should, I don’t see any improvement what did she do for all that money she made 🤔

  43. The whole thing needs to be cancelled waste of taxpayers money let the labor party fund it’s there propaganda machine
