The series has gained both critical and audience acclaim for its ability to delve into compelling and thought-provoking Australian stories.

According to Bernadine Lim, Senior Commissioning Editor at SBS, they are seeking narratives that offer a unique perspective, are relevant, and resonate with Australian audiences. She emphasized the network’s desire to perpetuate its legacy of quality documentaries that challenge misconceptions and engage viewers.

Previous entries in the series have tackled a range of topics, including an analysis of gender politics during Julia Gillard’s tenure as Prime Minister in ‘Strong Female Lead,’ comedian Celia Pacquola’s battle with anxiety in ‘The Truth About Anxiety,’ and an investigative delve into an unsolved serial murder case in ‘The Bowraville Murders.’

As part of the selection process, SBS will review the submitted proposals and select up to four single documentaries, varying from an hour to feature-length, for the 2025 season of Australia Uncovered. The proposals should encapsulate original concepts that align with the SBS Charter.

Submissions, including a 2–4-page proposal for an original one-hour or feature-length documentary and a 2–4-minute teaser, are open until the end of October 2023. Those who are successful will be contacted directly by SBS.
