Episode two pivots around Memphis, a robust three-and-a-half-year-old Doberman-Staffy cross, famed for his terrifying bark. Joel Creasey, an acclaimed comedian but a novice in dog rehabilitation, discovers how appearances can deceive, and not to “judge a book by its cover”.

Guiding him through this complex world is the renowned dog behaviourist Laura V, whose brave venture into Memphis’s cage shows her resolve in extending help to this traumatised canine.

The situation escalates as the show introduces Derek, the facility’s animal care officer and a single father, who’s the only person that can bridge the gap between Memphis and the rest of the world. The clock is ticking for Derek, as he strives to transition Memphis from the pound to a temporary foster home, before the unthinkable consequence of euthanasia becomes a reality.

The team faces a conundrum, given that the potential foster carer needs to have significant experience in dealing with dogs harbouring behavioural issues. Meanwhile, Laura, undeterred, is resolved to train Memphis to rekindle his trust in humans, enhancing his chances of finding a suitable carer.

The 2023 series, a product of Artemis production and funded by ABC and Screenwest, offers viewers an emotional and inspiring journey, spotlighting six unique rescue stories. Nia Pericles and Hannah Pocock are the series producers, with Celia Tait and Nia Pericles serving as executive producers. ABC’s Leo Faber is the executive producer, while ABC Commercial manages worldwide distribution.

Each episode of ‘New Leash on Life’ underscores the healing capacity of dogs and the profound joy they can bring into homes. Laura V and Joel Creasey are an extraordinary duo, working tirelessly to rescue and rehome dogs, ensuring their perfect match with a new family. ‘New Leash on Life’ is a testament to their commitment and an essential watch for all animal lovers.

The second episode of the six-part series, ‘New Leash on Life’ will air on Tuesday, 11 July at 8.00pm on ABC and iview.
