Australia is finally gearing up to produce its own version of the highly successful comedy series, ‘The Office’.
More than a year since it was first proposed, casting for the Australian adaptation of the hugely popular series is understood to be finalised.
The series is being developed for the Australian market by Prime Video.
The identity of the show’s central character, analogous to the roles played by Ricky Gervais and Steve Carell in the UK and US versions respectively, remains a tightly kept secret.
News Corp reports that the key role will be filled by a female star. Names including Katrina Milosevic, Rachel Griffiths, Magda Szubanski, Celia Pacquola, and Kitty Flanagan have all been rumoured.
The original UK series, co-written by Gervais, initially had two short six-episode seasons. Still, it rose to immense popularity, becoming one of the UK’s most successful comedy exports. The US adaptation followed suit, with Carell leading the cast for seven out of nine seasons.
The Australian version, however, is set to carve its own unique path. The upcoming series, expected to differ from both the UK and US versions, is being produced by Bunya Productions, the makers of ‘The Drover’s Wife’, ‘Jasper Jones’, and ‘Mystery Road’.
