In a Tuesday night interview with comedian Hannah Gadsby, The Project has carefully avoided discussing the national controversy surrounding the late Barry Humphries.
Hannah Gadsby has been in the spotlight due to their stance on renaming the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Barry Award, an accolade they received in 2017.
Humphries had previously described being transgender as “a fashion” and referred to individuals who underwent gender reassignment surgery as “mutilated men” in 2016. These contentious remarks led to calls from past award winners for the award to be renamed, culminating in the festival’s decision in 2019.
Gadsby is among those who spoke out against Humphries. They sparked a backlash after a tweet they posted, labelling Humphries as someone who “hates vulnerable minorities” and describing him as an “irrelevant, inhumane d**k,” resurfaced following his demise.
During the five-minute video chat on ‘The Project’, host Sam Taunton opted to steer clear of the recent uproar. Instead, the conversation centred around Gadsby’s success and their circle of celebrity friends.
“I’m still enough of a curiosity that people laugh at me anyway. The secret is not to hang out with them very much at all,” Gadsby commented during the interview.
Meanwhile, the organisers of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival have also been under fire, labelled as “gutless cowards” for their flip-flopping stance on the issue. Despite initially removing Humphries’ name from their top prize in 2019, they later issued a statement planning a “fitting tribute” to the late comedian.

All these Alphabet people hate normal people that have different opinions
If she was half as funny as Barry her opinion might have counted
God who cares, her life doesn’t revolve around Barry Humphries. She tweeted something that was correct what… ten years ago that Peter Ford decided to dredge up from the aether. It is not a relevant question to anyone except Peter Ford who either seems to blame her for BH’s death or wanted to get some publicity by jumping on the Barry bandwagon and sending the anti-woke hit squad after Hannah.
