As the contestants reflect on their position halfway through the competition Hamish asks, “Who would like a nice quiet challenge? …Bad luck!”

“I just got fried,” Caleb checks his eyebrows.

Today the teams need to create a moving story which suddenly explodes, like a scene out of a movie. The contestants have 9 hours. There’s no time to lose.

David and Gus are building a robot city destruction with an exploding wall. As usual, these quiet builders are 0 drama. We blink and their build appears. The engineers by trade show their mad engineering skills, their set explodes as plan with the buildings flying and their robot intact.

Scott and Owen start thinking about building a train. “Hmm, Ryan and Gabby are probably making a train, let me check.” Owen calls out to them.

Yep, they are. At least they are scrapping that idea within the first hour. Now they are doing a pirate heist.

“I don’t think we’ve ever stuffed a build with this much Lego.” Scott says.

“Shame it has to explode.” Owen replies as we applies the finishing touches.

With less than an hour to go, Hamish asks if the guys can make their hero – who is a mini fig version of Fabio – swing from the ship and fly off. When time is up, Owen finishes the swinging hero with a 50:50 success rate. Come boom time, their hero flies off the ship just in time before it explodes into absolutely nothing.

“There’s absolutely no ship left.” Brickman says, bewildered.

Andrew and Damien are going for a prison break.

“I know we look like the guys who know much about explosives but we don’t.” Andrew shrugs.

They absolutely nail the builds scale but the bus escaping the action gets caught up in the explosion and it explodes beautifully – although not planned – amongst the raining prisoner mini figs. Good job guys.

Caleb and Alex are struggling to pick an idea, so far they’ve come up with an alien but are really struggling to know how it’s going to explode.

Even towards the end, the duo don’t have much of a story and Brickman picks up on this as bits of tongue go flying out of the exploding alien head.

Joss and Henry are going for something different, they’re thinking a rockstar, Max Gains, strumming a guitar. It involves 2 mechanisms – the guitar strumming and the rockstar moving forward – in one which is pretty difficult to pull off.

They strategically build their set so the speakers and banner explode and their rockstar stays intact which he does.

This build was a personal favourite and even by interpreting the brief a little differently they produce a spectacular build.

Gabby and Ryan are building a gem train explosion. Having built over 200-and-something trains, Ryan’s really excited to build one today, trains are his forte.

During the build, they start to argue. Gabby wants to add some concrete pillars to the bridge and Ryan tells her it doesn’t fit the historical aspect. Gabby points to the pink haired warriors and asks what part of this build is historically accurate.

“So we compromised and did what I suggested.” Gabby grins.

The train flies off the build mid explosion with a rainbow of flying gems. It’s a true delight.

The Results:

You can’t stop watching the explosive results this episode.

Everyone rejoices to learn no one is going home. Today is not an elimination.

There may not be losers but there are definitely winners. Scott and Owen and Gabby and Ryan round out the top two.

The exploding gems in the train created a beautiful results for Ryan and Gabby but you can’t top the perfect timing of Scott and Owen’s launching hero. Scott and Owen win the challenge and the magic powers of the molten brick have been returned to them.

Lego Masters: Grand Masters returns Sunday at 7:30 on 9 and 9NOW.
