Wednesday is a magical mystery night on Australian Lego Masters with special guest Sophie Monk spotting the good builds from the great. Let’s recap episode 3 of Australian Lego Masters: Grand Masters.

Today is the last day of brick week to win the mystery brick.

Tonight we’ve gone back to a simpler time before COVID and Beatles, back to black and white TV. Blake and Brickman detectives are on the case to spot the real lego builds from the fakes. Previous episodes of Lego Masters: Grand Masters have encouraged sky high thinking but today’s build is about replication.

The contestants are encouraged to pick any item from the detective set and replicate it as close as they can with Lego.

Like Olympic gymnastics, Brickman is awarding the contestants a difficulty bonus. So how ambitious will our Lego masters go?

The contestants have 10 hours to complete their builds and will get 3 bonus points for tricking the special guest with their builds later in the show. Go!

The builds:

David and Gus have with happy-medium difficulty tape recorder. These guys are incredibly clever but incredibly quiet. They’re build features all the key details of a 20th Century tape recorder including Lego walkie talkie and reels.

While Kale contemplates replicating the desk and chair. Trent picks out the radio, it’s safe to much of Kales displeasure. Kale keeps coming back to the chair but Trent wants to get through this build with his sanity intact. To make things more interesting, Kale gets the idea to use flat lego bricks to give the radio a woodgrained effect and it’s pretty cool just super time intensive and ends up giving the radio an uneven surface, costing them points.

At the beginning Owen runs straight to the most difficult item possible; a fan. “We’ll figure it out,” He shrugs.

This fan is full of curvy lines and weird angles which is anything but traditional Lego.

“If we’re not doing the impossible, we’re not going to win.” Owen sounds like the dusty motivational poster on my garage wall. But he has a point, this is grand masters.

By the halfway mark, Scott and Owen are hating life right now. “We are trying to make Lego look like the real thing, which takes professionals months to do.” Scott explains.

Brickman encourages them to make the fan move and mid-way through the build, they get their Lego fan to start spinning so hard it breaks in half. Whoops.

With 30 minutes left, they finally get their fan spinning. Brickman is mostly happy with it but he thinks they should slow the fan speed down so you can see the blades. They frantically try to fix the mechanism to slow down the fan and miraculously pull it off. Everyone is in awe of this supposedly unbuildable fan but hey, this is grand masters. Expect the unexpected!

Andrew and Daamian Damien choose a sand green typewriter.

“The hardest part is ALL OF IT!” Damien shrieks.

On top of the intricate typewriter features, this typewriter is sand green, a lego colour which is reserved for Statue of Liberty and Yoda build sets. They start their build by starting with bottom and working their way up.

“What about the top bit?” Hamish asks.

“Oh we’re saving the hardest part for last.” Andrew says.

“We are?” Damian raises an eyebrow.

“Yep. It’s a great strategy,” Andrew replies. Seems legit.

By the end of the 10 hours, the typewriter has magically come together is definitely one of the leading builds tonight.

Caleb and Alex play it safe with a stack of books. Caleb has a clever idea to turn some car tyres inside out to imitate the book ends they need to build. There’s not too much to say about this build so Brickman needs to clasp straws and argues with Caleb about changing the wording on one of the books because it isn’t 100% accurate. It’s good enough to go on my bookshelf. Ace work.

Just as Gabby and Ryan decide on the lamp, Joss and Henry go “yoink!” and steal the art deco lamp. It seemed like a great idea at first but there’s a lot of constraints with building a lamp. Brickman wants them to light it up and the boys get a light bulb idea.

4 hours in, they get the lights glowing under the lamp but because the Lego they are using isn’t see-through the lighting is not very impressive. They abandon the light up idea.

For an intricate art deco lamp, they do a stellar job at a near impossible item to replicate. Almost looks like the real thing.

Sarah and Henry have picked the inconspicuous coat rake, it’s harder than it looks and its going to be the largest build (sorry not sorry, Kale). With thirty minutes to go, the stand is missing a few hooks short to Brickman’s displeasure but the size of it is still impressive.

Gabby and Ryan choose the clock. This wooden clock has a lot of curves and Ryan tries the forbidden art of brickbending. It’s almost legal but legal enough for Lego masters. Which is great idea until the bent bricks break. Second times a charm, and Brickman praises them for bending the rules and replicating a near perfect clock.

The mystery unravels:

So Brickman and Hamish have made their scores but how will the teams get their 3 bonus points? Cue in Jessica Rabbit aka: Sophie Monk!

Sophie has one minute to spot the 8 Lego items around the room, she spots the tape recorder, the clock, the lamp.

The Results:

The results are in and it’s extremely close. Andrew and Damian and their type writer come a very close second to Scott and Owen’s life-like fan.

Scott and Owen lock themselves in as the winners of brick week and win a special molten brick which will give them immunity at a later challenge.
