Significant Others tells the intriguing story of a single mother who fails to return from her morning swim

Sarah (Jacqueline McKenzie) put a wrecking ball through her family. Secretive and divisive, she won a recent inheritance battle to claim the family home – and put a wrecking ball through that too. Now Sarah has vanished.

Sarah’s disappearance draws her estranged siblings back to find the family home in smithereens: Den (Kenneth Moraleda) with his fiancé, Wayne (Todd McKenney), Ursula (Rachael Blake) and her man-splaining husband, Scott (Alan Dukes), and the youngest sibling, Claire (Alison Bell), who allows herself to get waylaid at a wine tasting while police boats circle for Sarah.

Sarah’s two teenage children, Hanna (Zoë Steiner) and Ciaran (Gulliver McGrath), carry their mother’s grudge against her siblings but also crave guidance.

When the police officer assigned to the case, Constable Deborah Munroe (Rarriwuy Hick), fails to deliver answers or retrieve a body from the ocean as promised, the purgatory of uncertainty upends the lives of these hapless souls.

As hope fades that Sarah will return, this warring family must find a peaceful new existence.

Though this ensemble of characters fail to see eye to eye, in this story of messy grief their trajectories are aligned. Secrecy, despair, sexual yearnings and surprise joys are all part of the journey as they attempt to rebuild.

This six-part series is created by award-winning writer Tommy Murphy (Holding the Man, Devil’s Playground).

Tommy Murphy, creator and writer, said:

“Significant Others is a character-driven series with an undertow of intrigue. It follows a family tearing each other apart over a missing loved-one.”

The series is executive produced by Chris Oliver-Taylor (Glitch) and Justin Davies (Beautiful People). ABC Executive producers are Louise Smith and Sally Riley. Acclaimed producer Matt Reeder (Hearts & Bones) is series producer.

Executive producers, Chris Oliver-Taylor, CEO Asia Pacific Fremantle and Justin Davies, said:

“Significant Others is a triumphant, edge of your seat series full of intrigue and suspense about a very contemporary family scrambling to rebuild from catastrophe.”

Signficant Others premieres Sunday 16 October at 8.30pm on ABC and iview

    Regards Mike at Mooney

    • Totally Agree. Only watched last two episodes to see how it ends..Final Episode will be a stretch to watch.

  2. Crikey Mike!
I saw a fascinating and compelling story, rich in nuance, told by an exemplary cast. I thought the script was tight, and the characters original and truthful. I’m really looking forward to seeing what next week brings…

  3. Agree with Mike Fish at this stage, but hoping it improves The only strength so far is Rachel Blake playing Aunty Ursula

  4. What is this disjointed ridiculous drama. Cannot believe any family – no matter how fractured and dysfunctional would act like this. Badly written. Don’t care about any of them. It’s unbelievably bad

  5. This is so slow moving and has gotten away from the disappearance of the woman!
    Tonight’s a bad influence on young people👎🏻
