After four decades in television, Williams is stepping back.
Nine News Sydney sports presenter, Cameron Williams, has immediately resigned from the role he first began presenting it in 2016.
In an email to staff, Williams said:
“It’s with a heavy heart I have decided to resign from Nine. Leaving the best team in News is difficult and being part of that team an honour.
“But I have struggled for years with increasingly poor health and I want to address that now for the sake of a more important team, my family.”
After speculation of Williams’ retirement, Director of News and Current Affairs, Darren Wick, told staff in an earlier email:
“Cameron Williams has resigned from his role with NINE as on-air sports presenter.
“Cam is leaving us to focus on his health and then to pursue other opportunities that we look forward to hearing more about.
“I want to thank Cam for his significant contribution to Nine over the past six years.”
Wick confirmed Williams’ final day with Nine News was on Monday.
Today’s surprising announcement of a resignation comes as the Daily Telegraph reports Williams had been battling COVID-19 at the beginning of this month, but was cleared to return to work last week.
In his absence James Bracey has filled in as weeknight sports presenter while Emma Lawrence has presented the weekend bulletins.
Before taking on the role of Nine News Sydney sports presenter, Williams was one of the original co-hosts of Weekend Today when it launched in 2009, coinciding with his sports anchor role on Today which he held in 2006.
He left Today in 2010, and then Weekend Today in 2016, before replacing veteran broadcaster Ken Sutcliffe on Nine News Sydney.
An official replacement for Williams has yet to be announced.
