Shane Warne to Leigh Sales in 2018:
“…all my life I’ve never pretended to be something I’m not. You know, I’ve always been straight up. I’ve always been honest. And people might not like what I say, but I think they respect it. And I think that is why I’m still popular, because if I tried to not take ownership or not put up my hand and say ‘You know what, I stuffed up. yes, I did,’ and not own that, then I think people would say ‘Look at this…’ But I think the majority of people still like me because I’m human. You know, I do make a few mistakes, I will probably make a few more.”
In 2018, 7.30 anchor Leigh Sales sat down with Shane Warne to discuss his life on and off the cricket pitch in an extended interview.
The interview was conducted at the MCG where Warne had many career highlights including a hat trick and his 700th wicket. In recent days after his death it was announced the MCG will rename the Great Southern Stand the S.K. Warne Stand to recognise his incredible life and career.
In his interview with Sales, Warne was honest and candid about his career and in tribute to one of the most significant cricket careers of all time the ABC is replaying this special interview at 8pm Monday March 7.
Reflecting back on her interview with Warne, Sales said:
“When I started at 7.30 in 2011, one person was at the top of my interview wishlist: Warnie…I felt that except for one interview by Michael Parkinson when Warnie retired, Warnie had never been given a serious in-depth TV interview that treated him properly. He was a genius and historically important cricketer but also something that’s increasingly rare: a true and original character who was unapologetic about who he was.”
