One of Australian TV’s most well-known and popular crew members, Phil Lambert has passed away over the weekend.
Lambert worked at GTV9 Melbourne for 50 years before retiring in 2019. It was an achievement which would see him recognised as the stations longest serving employee.
While he worked on just about every program Nine produced in the city, it was his role as floor manager on Hey Hey It’s Saturday, where he would become beloved by viewers. Lambert earned the nickname “Lucky Phil” and was regularly featured in on-air in comedy segments.

In a note to staff, Managing Director of Nine Melbourne Matt James acknowledged the significant contribution Lambert had made at the network.
Phil was Nine Melbourne’s longest-serving staff member, until his retirement in 2019.
He joined GTV9 just a few months before man first walked on the moon, back in July of 1969.
During his time at Nine, Phil worked with some of the biggest names in television, including Graham Kennedy, Bert Newton, Don Lane, Ernie Sigley, Denise Drysdale, Pete Smith, Eddie McGuire, Peter Hitchener and, of course, Daryl Somers.
It was on Hey Hey it’s Saturday that Phil became known to a generation of Australians as ‘Lucky Phil’.
Phil spent most of his career in the camera department, but also spent time working in staging and as a floor manager.
Our deepest condolences to Kara, Michael and his family.
He will be sadly missed. RIP Phil.
