Longing for a quieter life on the land, Kristy and Neil bought a fifty-two-hectare property in rural Gippsland.

But the run-down farm will need serious work if they are to create the productive garden they desire. The garden plans feature an extensive vegetable patch, an orchard of fruit and nut trees, a pizza oven with an entertaining area and a brand-new barn style house to overlook the incredible valley below.

This would be a big endeavour for a skilled farmer, so with no gardening experience themselves, the learning curve is steep for the Melbourne-based family.

Local landscape designer, Prue Metcalfe, will steer them in the right direction with a design that ties together all their requirements. However, once complete, it will ultimately be up to the family to take control so they are determined to learn as much as possible from the local community.

This challenge is all too familiar for Ian and Joan Ball who created their dream garden, ‘The Falls’, a decade ago. Michael visits the couple to explore what has become a combination of exquisite formal gardens, productive areas, a vineyard and even a working cattle farm.

Production credits: Supervising Executive Producer, Frances O’Riordan. Executive Producer, Jane Rowley, Series Producer, Leisa Pratt.

Dream Gardens – Gippsland Series 3, Episode 4 airs Friday 23 July 8.00pm on ABC and iview
