Classic American comedy series Saturday Night Live has returned with new episodes just in time for the US Election, but so far Australians are being denied a chance to see it.

Season 46 of the heritage comedy franchise launched in the US just over a week ago, but currently no Australian broadcaster hold the local rights to show.

Foxtel has been the long-term home of SNL but is yet to renew its broadcast agreement for new episodes.

A spokesperson for Foxtel has offered some hope for fans, telling TV Blackbox the pay-tv operator was “still in discussions around this title” and that they hopefully would “have an answer soon”.

Episodes from previous seasons of SNL remain available on Foxtel’s On Demand platform.

The rights issue comes at a time when the show is generating plenty of attention my mocking craziness of the US election.

The season premiere featured Alec Baldwin reviving his much-loved impression of Donald Trump alongside comedian Jim Carrey playing the role of Joe Biden.

Highlights from the sketch received plenty of news coverage, but this doesn’t always provide a ratings boost, due to savvy viewers preferring to watch short clips online.
