Nine’s Wide World of Sports will honour two legends of Australian sport in Bill Lawry and Ian Chappell with the new documentary series A Glorious Life.
Hosted by Peter Overton, the documentary specials will feature interviews with Shane Warne, Dennis Lillee, Billy Birmingham, Greg Chappell, Mark Taylor, Ian Botham, Mark Nicholas and many more.
Â
True icons of international sport, Lawry and Chappell rose to hold one of the highest offices in the land – captaining the Australian cricket test team. Both men are ferociously fierce competitors who triumphed with the bat and earned the respect of their men and the nation.
Â
Following the conclusion of their playing careers, both men leveraged their household profiles to become integral members of Nine’s cricket broadcast team, with Lawry’s commentating career spanning an astonishing 45 years, which saw him earn the moniker of ‘The Voice of the MCG’.
Lawry’s voice become the sound of the Australian summer, combining his passion for the game with his expert knowledge and infectious enthusiasm.
Â
Chappell was part of Australian cricket’s most famous family, with his grandfather and brother both also captaining the Australian side. Known affectionately as ‘Chappelli’ he earned a reputation as one of the greatest captains the game had ever seen. In his commentary career since, his razor-sharp intellect and analysis to every ball and captain’s call made him one of the pillars of cricket broadcasting.
Â
Beyond playing and calling the game they love, Lawry and Chappell have lived rich lives. For both men, family and friendship are sacrosanct. Loyalty is unbreakable, integrity is central, and both have unforgettable stories that demand to be told.
