When it comes to the coronavirus pandemic, time takes on new meaning. So much is so rapidly changing, it’s overwhelming. But one thing’s certain: right now, Australia is precariously perched on the edge of a frightening medical and economic cliff. While the disease is not being controlled here, COVID-19 is not yet out of control. But as global health experts keep warning us, unless we all drastically change the way we live, we face a bleak future.

In a special edition of 60 MINUTES, Liam Bartlett, Liz Hayes and Tara Brown report the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis, including:

An up-to-date assessment from Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and explanation of the federal government’s latest stimulus package.

Scientific research into a cure for the disease, as well as the hunt for a vaccine.

The economic impacts for Australian businesses big and small, including exclusive interviews with Atlassian co-founder Scott Farquhar, and Canva boss, Melanie Perkins.

How Australian families are protecting themselves and transitioning to the reality of social distancing.

  1. Tonight I watched the 60 minutes report by Tara Brown on how China somehow caused a Pandemic with Covid 19 for the rest of the world. What absolute garbage! This kind of sensationalism and bending the truth by interviewing people with extreme views is not at all helpful at this critical time for the Australian public.
We were in China when the corona virus broke out. Sure the Chinese government did cover up in the very early stages but when they understood the gravity of the situation they were very upfront with the rest of the world sharing data and the genetic sequence of the virus with the rest of the world. But world leaders chose to ignore the warnings. There was plenty of time to prepare that was totally wasted. The story said that 5 million people left Wuhan with the implication that they went all around the world spreading the virus. The truth is that nearly all of those people went to other parts of China for the lunar new year. Yes they should have locked down before the lunar new year but the fact that China has managed to contain the virus in those circumstances is a great credit their leadership and community spirit. We returned to Australia at the end of January. By that time every part of China was going into lock down. We just escaped in time to avoid it. On arriving at Sydney airport we were absolutely staggered that no one here was taking it seriously. Someone from bio-security handed out a pamphlet advising people to see a doctor if the were not feeling well! What a joke. A young passenger sitting a few seats away from us was coughing the whole flight. He just went off into the community. We did not take the threat seriously. Now is not the time to be pointing the finger at China. We should be trying to handle the situation as well as China did and if we can achieve that it will be a great achievement. I am an Australian of British decent and have no bias. I have never commented on any show before but this story made my blood boil. Brian Hickman
