In a world of reboots, this one seemed pretty obvious. The likeable comedy from the ‘90s initially ran for 7 seasons, but no major network in the US seemed interested in picking up the revival. But finally Mad About You has found a new home.
It was the era of “Must See TV” on NBC and Mad About You might not have been its biggest star (to be fair it was on around the same time as Friend’s and Seinfeld), but it was well liked and a strong performer. Since the final episode in 1999 the television landscape has changed dramatically, leading to talk of a revival of the series.
NBC, the original home of the series, immediately ruled itself out. FOX and ABC followed suit. The only interested broadcaster was CBS, although talks broke down and no deal was done.
Now the Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt comedy has been picked up by Spectrum Originals, an on-demand video platform. Both stars will serve as Executive Producers and Hunt will direct the first episode.
TV Line has details about what the new series will look like, reporting;
The quasi Season 8 will revolve around Paul and Jamie grappling with empty-nest syndrome in the wake of now-17-year-old daughter Mabel’s admission to college. Peter Tolan (Rescue Me) has been brought in as showrunner and will serve as an EP alongside Reiser, Hunt, Brian Volk-Weiss, Michael Pelmont and Matthew Ochacher. Danny Jacobson, who co-created the show with Reiser, will serve as an executive consultant.
At this stage it’s unknown how Australian fans would be able to watch the series.
