The end of the intense first season saw Offred, one of the few remaining fertile women in the oppressive society of Gilead (formerly the United States) forced into sexual servitude as a ‘Handmaid’, falling pregnant before being ominously dragged off in the back of a van, her future uncertain.

The 13-episode second season is shaped by Offred’s pregnancy and her ongoing fight to free this future child from the horrors of Gilead. “Gilead is within you” is a favourite saying of Aunt Lydia. In season two, Offred and all characters will fight against – or succumb to – this dark truth.

Marshall Heald, SBS Director of TV and Online Content said: “The first season of The Handmaid’s Tale was an overwhelming success with Australian audiences embracing its themes of women’s rights and governmental power and control.

“To date the series has had 26 million chapter views, making it the most watched series ever on SBS On Demand*. The Handmaid’s Tale is thought-provoking, timely and scarily relevant, and is exactly the sort of premium drama that SBS wants to bring Australians.”

This second season will expand the world of the Handmaids, with newcomers to the cast including Cherry Jones (Transparent, 24), Marissa TomeiClea DuVall (Veep), and Bradley Whitford (Get Out, The West Wing) joins as a Commander.

Among the returning cast are Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winning Elisabeth MossJoseph Fiennes, Australia’s Yvonne StrahovskiAlexis Bledel, Madeline Brewer, Emmy® award-winning Ann Dowd, O-T Fagbenle, Max Minghella, Samira Wiley and Amanda Brugel.

Executive Producers of season two are Bruce Miller, Warren Littlefield, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, Ilene Chaiken and Elisabeth Moss.  The series is created for television by Bruce Miller, based on the work of Margaret Atwood. The Handmaid’s Tale is produced by MGM Television and internationally distributed by MGM.
