Australia’s number one rugby league broadcaster, Ray ‘Rabs’ Warren will return to call the game on the Nine Network in 2017.
While no announcement has been officially made, DeciderTV has learned from senior figures with the network that the veteran commentator will return for his 51st year behind the microphone in 2017.
Warren was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2011. Speculation about his future had been mounting after he told Fairfax Media at the start of the 2016 season that this would likely be his last.
“Fifty and out. I like that. I’m thinking this season will be it for me, I’m thinking that way. In fact, I’d be happy to get through the year, to be honest.
“I’ve had some bad health in the past 12 months and had too many anaesthetics, maybe it’s trying to tell me something. I’m thinking if I can get through this year it would be good. I’ve had the prostate problem, hernias and God knows what operated on.
“You’re in hospital with all the footballers in the off season … If I can go on, I will but I’m just telling you the honest truth. At the moment, if I get through this year I’ll be happy.”
After beginning his career in radio. Warren moved to TEN Network in 1974. In 1988 he joined Nine and soon earned the reputation as “The Voice of Rugby League”
