Channel 7 has made its long-serving sports anchor Matt Carmichael redundant, ending a 23-year career with the network.

The Daily Telegraph reports the 44-year-old was told of the decision on Monday, with management informing staff via email.

In a message to colleagues, Seven’s director of news and current affairs Ray Kuka said Carmichael would soon be leaving the newsroom.

“Matt will now be taking a well-deserved extended break.

Matt leaves as a script craftsman.

Matt has worked at Seven for two decades but, sadly, that will come to an end next month, fittingly after Bathurst 1000.

We wish Matt all the best and look forward to celebrating his final weeks.”

During his career, Carmichael worked across Sunrise, Seven Morning News, Seven Afternoon News and the network’s 6pm bulletin. He covered major sporting events including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games and the Australian Open, while also reporting on AFL, cricket, boxing, rugby union and motor sport.

He was on the ground at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 where he recorded a now-famous interview with swimming coach Dean Boxall, he also interviewed late NBA star Kobe Bryant during the Beijing Games in 2008, and was a familiar face at the Bathurst 1000.

Born in Sydney, Carmichael studied a Bachelor of Journalism at Queensland University of Technology before joining Seven.

Matt Carmichael’s final weeks with Channel 7 will conclude after the Bathurst 1000.

  1. Michael Carmichael was great for Channel 7 and what ever happened to another well known sports presenter? Might have to switch to Channel 9

  2. It looks like 7 is going down the same road as 9. I can think of others in the Sport Newsroom, who have been there less time and cover less. Such a shame. He’s a great guy

  3. Maree Brought Alex Cullen back with Winning Arvo so they needed to find the money to pay him so they let Matt Go
