Survivor fans are set for a major shake-up as David Genat replaces Jonathan La Paglia as host of Australian Survivor.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Australian Survivor: Redemption.

David Genat has finally been announced as the new host of Australian Survivor, confirming one of Australian TV’s worst-kept secrets, with filming now underway in Samoa for the franchise’s 12th season, Australian Survivor: Redemption.

The appointment follows the departure of long-serving host Jonathan La Paglia, who confirmed in June that he would not return to the series in 2026. La Paglia, who guided the program for a decade, revealed on Instagram that Network 10 had informed him it was “going in a different direction” after recent ratings softness.

In a tongue-in-cheek farewell, he described the decision as “a host swap”, adding: “It has been one of the greatest adventures of my career to helm Australian Survivor, so it is without a doubt the hardest challenge of all to snuff my own torch but here goes; ‘JLP… the tribe has spoken.’”

TV Blackbox can reveal the new season will introduce a twist not seen before in the local version, with four returning players taking on the roles of tribe “captains.” This addition is expected to influence the early social and strategic dynamics in the game. It is understood returning players include Brooke Jowett, who previously featured in an All-Star season of the format, competing against Genat.

Filming of the “Redemption” season began two weeks ago in Samoa, with the series being executive produced by Amelia Fisk. Phoebe McMahon is attached as co-producer.

Genat’s elevation to host comes after three separate stints as a competitor. He first appeared on Australian Survivor: Champions V Contenders in 2019, before claiming victory in Australian Survivor: All Stars the following year. He returned again for Survivor: Australia V The World, where his reputation as a strategic player made him an early target. Beyond the franchise, he also gained international attention as a finalist on the US series Deal or No Deal Island.

For the new season, Genat will oversee tribal councils and challenges, taking on the role once synonymous with La Paglia.

“I love Australian Survivor. It truly is the greatest game on earth so getting to come back as host after playing three times is such an honour,” Genat said.

“But Survivor is not about me; it’s about the incredible players who put everything on the line to outwit, outplay, and outlast. I am pumped for the fans to meet the new crop of Survivors next season.”

Daniel Monaghan, SVP Content and Programming at Paramount Australia, said Genat brought a unique perspective as both a former contestant and winner.

“As Australian Survivor moves into its 12th season, it’s no secret there’s been a change at the helm.

As we step into this exciting new era, there was simply no better person to pass the baton to – David’s track record, not just on Survivor but across reality TV worldwide, is unrivalled, and there’s no one with more real-time experience and game knowledge to help steer this epic season.”

According to Monaghan, the format remains centred on the players, who “pour their heart and soul into every moment”, with the Redemption theme designed to give participants a chance to “rewrite their story for a shot at greatness.”

La Paglia remains on screens for now with the Australia V The World season currently airing on 10. His departure marks the end of a significant era for the program, with many fans crediting his authoritative but empathetic presence as central to the show’s identity.

How audiences respond to the change of host, and to the structural shift promised in the Redemption format, will become clear when the series makes its return.

Australian Survivor: Redemption will premiere on Network 10 in 2026.

  1. I have always watched Survivor – US, UK, NZ, South Africa. I will not be watching with this person as host. EVER.

  2. Geoff Field, now you must, at the very least, recognise the LaPaglia name (outgoing guy)🧐🤔😊

  3. It’s always about return players. Let’s see some newbies or the return of folks like Bianca Anderson. Ones with promise voted off first. Now that would be something to watch.

  4. Big Mistake Ten.Yet again .The only good person on your network he made what Survivor is today with out LaPaglia the show is done …Good Byev

  5. People don’t understand when someone hosts a show and it’s successful. Everytime there contract is up for negotiation. They always ask for more. Kyle gets $1 million for doing idol. They offered him more and he said no I’m happy with the $1 million. Because he loves doing the show. Kyle also doesn’t like the fact someone else who does the same job gets paid less.

  6. How did David do hosting Nine’s short lived show “Rush”? That may give us an idea of how he’ll do hosting Survivor. I certainly wish him all the best as he takes on the role. And of course, I wish JLP all the best in his future endeavors. Survivor won’t be quite the same without him.
