Cameras are officially rolling in Melbourne for ABC’s upcoming comedic offering, “White Fever,” a brainchild of emerging talent Ra Chapman.

The show stars Ra Chapman as Jane, a brash Korean-Australian adoptee with a peculiar taste for hirsute, Caucasian men. Facing scrutiny from her pals over her so-called “white fever,” Jane embarks on a transformative adventure that unexpectedly leads her to a deeper self-understanding.

“White Fever” is more than just laughter and love. With elements ranging from hens’ parties and rural weddings to moon crystals and “gotcha” days, the series is a riotous blend of K-Pop, action, and Asian pop culture.

Ra Chapman, who not only stars but also penned the series, expressed sheer enthusiasm about the project.

“White Fever provides a roller-coaster ride that I hope will redefine how audiences perceive relationships, love, and even their own identities,” she said.

The cast features a slew of Aussie comic talents, including Chris Pang of “Crazy Rich Asians,” Roz Hammond from “Mad as Hell,” Greg Stone of “Jack Irish” fame, Katie Robertson seen in “Rosehaven,” Cassandra Sorrell, Harvey Zielinski, and Jillian Nguyen.

ABC’s Head of Comedy, Todd Abbott, praised the upcoming series as a romcom with an edge.

“It’s brilliantly funny, and dives deep into a one-of-a-kind narrative, offering so much more than your standard romantic comedy,” he commented.

Graeme Mason, Screen Australia’s CEO, regards “White Fever” as an exhilarating, authentic extension of the romcom genre, enriched with a thought-provoking exploration of identity and relationships.

The show is currently filming in various Melbourne locales for the next five weeks and will air on ABC TV and its digital platform ABC iview, come 2024. It’s the joint work of Ra Chapman and Katherine Fry, featuring scripts by a collaborative team that includes Michele Lee, Harvey Zielinski, and Clare Atkins. Aidee Walker is directing the series.
