In a significant shake-up for “Dancing With The Stars,” iconic judge Helen Richey has decided to step down from her long-held role due to a serious family health concern. This news comes just as the show is set to begin filming its new season in Sydney on Monday.
The Herald-Sun reports Richey, whose husband Robert recently underwent major surgery, has been a respected member of the show’s judging panel since its inception in 2004. In her absence, Sharna Burgess will join the panel alongside Mark Wilson and Todd McKenney.
In another change for the upcoming season, Craig Revel Horwood will replace Paul Mercurio, who is focusing on his political career as a member for Hastings in the Victorian parliament.
Sharna Burgess and Craig Revel Horwood will be familiar to Australian audiences after both judging the series during its stint on the 10 Network.
In a statement, Richey expressed her deep disappointment at having to step away from the show but affirmed that her family remains her top priority. Richey and her husband Robert will be supporting the show from their home, wishing all contestants good luck.
Channel Seven responded to the news with warmth and understanding. A spokesperson for the network acknowledged the unfortunate timing clash due to Robert’s recovery from major surgery and sent their best wishes for his speedy recovery. They also expressed hopes to welcome Helen back to the show in the future.
The new season of “Dancing With The Stars” is slated to air on Channel Seven in June. The celebrity line-up includes Charlie Albone, Christie Whelan Browne, Emily Weir, Gavin Wanganeen, Issa Schultz, James Magnussen, Laura Byrne, Mary Coustas, Matt Preston, Paulini, Phil Burton, Pia Miranda, Sally Pearson, and Virginia Gay.

I’m familiar with nine of the “celebrity” names in this season. That might be a record for me.
