Nine’s Today Show has been under scrutiny following the recent departure of sports presenter Alex Cullen, but could another hosting change be flying under the radar?
Over the summer break, a number of fill-ins appeared across both the weekday and weekend editions of Nine’s long-running breakfast program. However, one weekend co-host has yet to return to their regular role, sparking speculation about whether they will return at all.
Sophie Walsh, a longtime Nine reporter, was officially appointed as co-host of Weekend Today in August last year, joining Clint Stanaway after Jayne Azzopardi moved to the weekday newsreader position. At the time, Walsh served as the weekend newsreader, while Lizzie Pearl was brought in to cover the news—a role that now appears to be permanent.

While Walsh has returned to work for the year, she has mostly fronted Nine’s national morning news and Sydney’s afternoon bulletin, but has not been seen on Weekend Today. The daytime bulletins were previously helmed by Davina Smith, who left late last year to relocate to Queensland and joined A Current Affair.
Adding to the speculation, Walsh has quietly removed references to Today and Nine from her social media profiles. When contacted for comment, a network spokesperson refrained from confirming Walsh’s status, instead reiterating that different presenters often fill in during the summer schedule.
Despite this, February has now arrived, the Australian Open has concluded, MAFS back on air, and most of the weekday Today team has returned — except for Tim Davies, who will return to the roving weather position on Monday.
The network spokesperson also added, “We’ll be announcing a full line-up soon,” confirming that changes are in the works for the Today show’s hosting lineup in 2025. Industry sources have also indicated to TV Blackbox that Nine is “trying new things” with the breakfast program.

Since late December, 60 Minutes reporter Alison Piotrowski has stepped in as Weekend Today co-host alongside Stanaway and other rotating presenters, including this weekend. Piotrowski has appeared comfortable in the role, showing strong on-air chemistry with the team. Could this be Nine’s new duo for 2025?
Meanwhile, Nine is likely weighing its options to fill Cullen’s former weekday role after his departure following the Portelli incident. A rotation of network presenters and current hosts, including Clint Stanaway, Roz Kelly, and more recently Danica Mason, have all filled in to present sport.
In a recent Daily Mail Inside Media column, it was also reported that Karl Stefanovic may be reconsidering his role on the weekday show amid contract renewals at the end of the year. The network is also reportedly exploring the possibility of moving the show’s production to Melbourne.
