This is a week full of star turns on Foxtel.

 

When it comes to megawatt power, it’s hard to go past music icon Elton John, and the biopic based on his life, Rocketman lives up to its subject! Taron Egerton will charm you as he sings his way through some of the legend’s biggest hits in this extravangza of a film.

 

When it comes to knocking ’em out, the Jeff Horn vs Michael Zerafa fight is a must for fans of the sport. Horn’s recent rise to success surprised a lot of people, and Zerafa will be a worthy opponent, so don’t miss!

 

For a melee of a totally different kind, see who comes out on top at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards which can always be relied upon for some amazing on-stage performances, as well as some spectacular outfits.

 

Drama lovers will be keen to check out all the emotional biffo in the final season of hit series The Affair. Meanwhile, Hollywood heavyweight Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson dominates both the big and small screens, and this week his comedy series Ballers returns for a fifth outing.

 

For sport clashes, it’s the second last regular round in the NRL Telstra Premiership; racing fans will be keen to see who reigns at the Formula 1 Johnnie Walker Belgian Grand Prix; some stellar Aussie talent will take part in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019; and the best of the best in tennis are Grand Slam ready for the US Open.

Ballers, s5 – FOX SHOWCASE, EXPRESS at 7.30pm

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson returns as formidable finance manager Spencer Strasmore in the fifth outing of this hugely popular half-hour HBO series. With last season’s finale finding our hero doing battle with the National Collegiate Athletic Association, expect to see the fallout when the action continues.

 

Impossible Railways – Discovery Turbo, 8.30pm

Over six one-hour episodes, take a look at how ingenious metropolitan railways keep cities running. Featuring incredible access, footage and expert analysis, examine these feats of modern technology.

 

Lakefront Luxury, s2 – Lifestyle Home, 9.30pm

See what an unlimited budget could get you as home buyers are shown three move-in-ready lakefront properties that tick all their boxes in this envy-inducing series. Kicking off proceedings are couple Catherine and Neil, who are on the hunt for a family abode for their children.

 

Are You the One?, s8 – MTV, 3pm

The groundbreaking eighth season of this dating show with a twist sees 16 singles head to Hawaii, with the hope of partnering up for a chance to split a tidy US$1 million prize pool. But with this year’s contestants all openly sexually fluid, anything goes!

Tennis: US Open – ESPN, LIVE from 2am

The world’s best players converge on Flushing Meadows in New York for the fourth and final Grand Slam of 2019. World number one Novak Djokovic returns as men’s singles champion and will be incredibly hard to stop on the fast hardcourts, while Serena Williams is the local favourite in the women’s singles competition.

 

2019 MTV Video Music Awards – MTV, LIVE from 10am

Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift lead the charge with 10 nominations apiece going into this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, while newcomers Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X will be among those competing for Best New Artist when comedian Sebastian Maniscalco hosts the show live from New Jersey. Coverage of the always spectacular red carpet starts things off, before the ceremony gets underway at 11am.

 

History Uncovered – HISTORY, 8.30pm

Revisiting the key moments of the 20th century from a new perspective, this four-part docuseries aims to shed light on some of the biggest myths from history – including Hiroshima caused Japan’s surrender and Adolf Hitler was a military genius – exposing some rather revealing truths.

 

Drain the Oceans: Escape Alcatraz – National Geographic, 8.30pm

Using cutting-edge visual effects, audiences are given unprecedented insight into what lies beneath San Francisco Bay. From what made Alcatraz such an inescapable prison to the fault lines left by earthquakes that can foretell when the next big quake will hit, it’s a fascinating exposé.

Rocketman – Store

Rocketman is the biopic Elton John deserves – a touching musical extravaganza that weaves some of his most famous tunes into the story of his rise to fame. Taron Egerton (the Kingsman films), who does all his own singing, excels as the music icon, with John’s glittery costumes and trademark kooky sunglasses fitting him like a glove. Celebrate the middle of the week with this entertaining singalong delight.

 

60 Days In, s5 – Crime + Investigation, 9.30pm

It’s a fresh season of this series that sees individuals enter a prison undercover as inmates to explore the culture within. We head to Pinal County Detention Center in Arizona, one of the most dangerous jails in America. A new sheriff has brought in seven savvy participants, with specific missions for them to follow. What will they discover, and will they cope?

 

The Good Nazi – HISTORY, 7.30pm

Learn about Major Karl Plagge, a Nazi officer who followed his conscience and went against orders to secretly help save hundreds of Jewish families by hiding and sheltering them underground, and areas dug into the walls in a Lithuanian labour camp – although many at the camp weren’t so lucky. One of those he helped, plus the child of another, will revisit where it all took place.

 

Moonshiners: Whiskey Business – Discovery Channel, 10.25pm

Follow along as ‘moonshine legend’ Tim Smith, who went from making illegal liquor to running a legitimate moonshine brand, helps down-on-their-luck distilleries turn their fortunes around. He’ll bring some whiskey experts along for the ride, all in the name of preserving the tradition of homemade hooch.

 

Grand Designs Australia, s8 – Lifestyle, 8.30pm

Catch a new episode of the hit series hosted by Peter Maddison that follows some jaw-dropping transformations. Tonight he’ll venture to the nation’s capital, and meet someone who is creating their dream abode underground! He’ll discover that the end result actually makes perfect sense for Canberra’s variable climate. Be inspired!

2019 NRL Telstra Championship: Cowboys vs Bulldogs – FOX LEAGUE, LIVE 7pm

Round 24 – the penultimate round before finals get underway – starts tonight with this clash between the Cowboys and the Bulldogs in Townsville. When they met in Round 7, the Bulldogs triumphed 24-12, in part thanks to some stellar work from Corey Harawira-Naera. It’s a last chance for Michael Morgan’s Cowboys to get revenge – can they do it?

 

Secrets of the Zoo, s2 – Nat Geo WILD, 8.30pm

Animal lovers will love this series that goes behind the scenes of the

Columbus Zoo in Ohio to see what the day-to-day is like not only for the staff, but for the various creatures in their care. In this episode, everyone is excited about a major arrival – the birth of a baby giraffe! 

 

How I Caught the Killer – Crime + Investigation, 9.30pm

Catch the latest episode of the series that provides chilling insight as to how the police were able crack what most people would assume to be impossible cases. Tonight, a drive-by shooting had no witnesses – so just how did detective Jon Buehler unravel what led to the murder?

 

Treasures Decoded, s3 – HISTORY, 8.30pm

Discover the true story of the pyramids which once existed where Missouri is now located as a new season begins. This series dives deep into some ancient relics, monuments and sites to find fresh information about the societies and cultures behind them. Some expert archeologists step back in time and make some surprising discoveries.

2019 NRL Telstra Championship: Warriors v Rabbitohs – FOX LEAGUE, LIVE from 5.30pm

Your Friday night footy begins with the Warriors welcoming the Rabbitohs to Auckland, hoping that a defeat will earn them a spot in the top eight. Both teams will need to up the ante to claim a victory, and at this crucial stage of the season, you can bet they’ll be giving it their all. You can also catch the Broncos and Eels game following this live on FOX LEAGUE from 7.50pm.

 

Formula 1 Johnnie Walker Belgian Grand Prix 2019 – FOX SPORTS 506, LIVE from 6.45pm

All eyes turn to Ardennes this weekend, with the first practice getting underway this evening, our time. With his Hungarian victory earlier this month, Lewis Hamilton bounced back from a surprising 9th placing in Germany, so he will be hoping that his winning form is back to stay. But as that German event proved – absolutely anything can happen. Don’t forget you can also catch all the thrills – including the big one on Sunday, September 1 at 9.30pm – in 4K Ultra HD on Foxtel 4K.

 

Inglourious Basterds – Masterpiece Movies, 8.30pm

Masterpiece Movies continues to showcase Quentin Tarantino’s work with this 2009 hit. US soldiers set out to kill Hitler in this genre-blending WWII drama starring Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Diane Kruger and Christoph Waltz. What they don’t know is there’s a second assassination plot involving a young Jewish woman named Shosanna (Mélanie Laurent), who runs the cinema that’s set to host  the premiere of a Nazi propaganda film.  

 

Live PD Presents: Women on Patrol, s2 – Crime + Investigation, 7pm

What’s it like to be a female officer within the ranks of the American police force? Join the patrol in a new season of this fly-on-the-wall series which follows some women on the job in some hectic and dangerous neighbourhoods.

 

Saturday, August 31

Jeff Horn vs Michael Zerafa – MAIN EVENT, LIVE 7pm

Australian Jeff Horn’s supersonic rise has seen him topple some of the world’s best, including Manny Pacquiao in 2017. While he suffered a loss on his first US fight, against Terence Crawford, a triumph over Anthony Mundine late last year saw him redeem himself, and now he’s ready to take on countryman Michael Zerafa – a major force in his own right. This heartstopper could go either way, so fans of the sport will not want to miss!

 

Widows – Premiere Movies, 8.30pm

Acclaimed director Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave) assembles a killer cast – headed by Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Erivo, with Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell and Jacki Weaver also along for the ride – for this electric and powerful thriller. When four thieves are killed during a heist, their widows decide to pull off the next robbery themselves.

 

Rugby World Cup Warm-Up Matches – beIN SPORTS, LIVE at 5.10am and 11.30pm

With the Rugby World Cup just weeks away (beginning September 20), some warm-up matches are getting everyone excited, and today there are two to bookend your viewing. At 5.10am, France welcomes Italy to Stade de France. Then, to finish off your Saturday sport thrills, see who dominates when Wales and Ireland go head-to-head at Principality Stadium in Cardiff at 11.30pm.

 

Joni Mitchell at 75 – foxtel arts, 8.30pm

Perhaps only an artist the calibre of Joni Mitchell could find herself being serenaded by the likes of A-list artists such as Emmuylou Harris, Norah Jones, Diana Krall and Kris Kristofferson on the occasion of her 75th birthday. Fatal Attraction, s7 – Crime + Investigation, 8.30pm

This true-crime series chronicles real-life tales of love that went from passion to something deadly. In tonight’s new episode, a college student from a hectic neighbourhood in LA decides that a quiet hamlet in Georgia would be much more to her liking. With romance in her life, and a baby on the way, it looks like she made the right choice. But then she disappears.

 

Sunday, September 1

 

The Affair, s5 – FOX SHOWCASE, 8.30pm

The fifth and final season of this hit drama arrives cloaked in secrecy as to what’s about to happen. What we do know is that there will be a substantive time jump, with Anna Paquin (Flack) along with Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight) joining the cast. Dominic West and Maura Tierney return as former spouses Noah and Helen Solloway – but what’s about to unfold?

 

Holmes & Watson – Premiere Movies, 8.30pm

Will Ferrell and John C Reilly take you on a fun ride with this comic take on those famous titular sleuths! Tasked with solving a murder at Buckingham Palace, legendary detective Sherlock Holmes (Ferrell) and his partner Dr Watson (Reilly) realise they must thwart the evil Professor Moriarty’s (Ralph Fiennes) plan to assassinate Queen Victoria (Pam Ferris).

 

Basketball: FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 – FOX SPORTS MORE, LIVE 5.20pm

Australia’s men’s basketball stocks have never been greater, with the Boomers boasting nine NBA players for this month’s 18th World Cup in China. With a wealth of class throughout the squad, including Patty Mills, Aron Baynes, Joe Ingles and Matthew Dellavedova, hopes are high, and their campaign begins today when they take on Canada.

 

The Graham Norton Show, s25 – UKTV, 8.30pm

It’s a star-studded couch of fantastic guests tonight for our hilarious host Graham Norton. Our very own Kylie Minogue will add some sparkle to the conversation, along with Keanu Reeves, Gentleman Jack’s Suranne Jones, and that dashing Rocketman duo Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell. This is one group chat we definitely want to be part of.

 

Blowing Up History, s4 – Discovery Channel, 7.30pm

Following the theory that to really learn about something you need to pull it to bits is this popular series that uses explosive CGI effects, along with some nifty scientific know-how, to really see what some of the world’s biggest structures can teach us about the ancient cultures that created them. A fourth season begins tonight.
