We wonder what our favourite critics Margaret Pomeranz and Graeme Blundell might make of it? They’re back this week with a fresh season of SCREEN, so they’ll be casting their eyes over the latest TV and cinema releases, letting you know what’s worth a watch!

 

Definitely worth watching this week are some action-packed sports events, whether it’s the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship: OTR SuperSprint: The Bend in South Australia, some thrilling NRL Telstra Premiership clashes, a warm-up game for the coming Rugby World Cup, and some do-or-die thrills as the Toyota AFL Tournament heads into its final regular round where every game will be crucial!

Australian country music icon, winner of 37 Golden Guitars, opens up about his stellar career and the inspiration behind his greatest hits as he performs tracks from his 15th studio album, Backroad Nation, along with some enduring favourites.

 

American History’s Biggest Fibs – HISTORY, 7.30pm

It’s scary but true that many of the moments that defined America – such as the American Revolution and the Civil War – are littered with half-truths. Historian Lucy Worsley digs deep dispelling myths that were perpetrated for political and emotional needs. Tonight’s episode looks at the full story behind Paul Revere’s famous horse ride to Concord.

 

Maxing Out – National Geographic, 9.30pm

In this unique program, three Australian celebrities will be pushed to their absolute limits as they spend four months training for the world’s biggest long-distance triathlon, taking place in Munich, Germany. The question is: will they have what it takes?

 

Legendary Megastructures – HISTORY, 8.30pm

Take a look behind some of France’s most iconic historical buildings that make up Paris’s unique landscape in this fascinating new series. Over three episodes, see how Napoléon III and Baron Haussmann’s influence helped shape its modernisation.

Feel like something new? Your prayers are answered! John Goodman, Danny McBride, Adam Devine and Edi Patterson star in this uproarious comedy as a family of televangelists with a long and sordid history of greed, lust, gluttony… heck, just about all of the seven deadly sins!

 

Nadiya’s Asian Odyssey – Lifestyle Food, 8.30pm

Join British chef Nadiya Hussain as she ventures to Nepal, Thailand and Cambodia in the wake of a surprise DNA discovery linking her to the three countries. She experiences the people, places and – naturally – the food!

 

Drain the Oceans: Without a Trace – National Geographic, 8.30pm

Investigators delve into the mysteries of five US Navy planes that didn’t return to Florida’s Fort Lauderdale in 1945 presumed lost in the Bermuda Triangle. Then there’s the ongoing 2014 mystery of Malaysia Airlines’ Boeing 777 that had 239 people onboard and disappeared without a trace.

 

War Journal: The Incredible World War II Escape – HISTORY, 9.30pm

This is one of the most daring escapes of WWII – Americans Damon ‘Rocky’ Gause and William Lloyd Osborne sailed 51,500km over 52 days from the Philippines to Brisbane, Australia to their freedom. Footage captured on a small camera gifted to them, as well as extensive diary entries, helps bring this incredible story of survival to life.

Aussie Lobster Men – Discovery Channel, 8.30pm

Ever wonder how much money is in the lobster industry? This series follows a group of lobster boat captains in the waters off Australia who risk it all in the search of the best quality crustaceans! They have a brief window to make their haul and everything from wild weather and treacherous seas (including some wet and wild predators) to crew injuries, and more, will threaten.

 

Pokémon Detective Pikachu – Store

Ryan Reynolds voices wisecracking Detective Pikachu, whose former partner Harry (also voiced by Reynolds) has mysteriously disappeared. Teaming up with Harry’s son (Justice Smith), the two set out to uncover the truth. The fun family offering features impressive CGI and ace performances from Reynolds and Smith, not to mention Bill Nighy and Big Little Lies’ Kathryn Newton.

 

The Trump Dynasty – HISTORY, 8.30pm

This series traces the generations of the now-famous Trump clan, right from the Yukon Gold Rush in the 1890s. See what we can learn about the current president of the United States through his ancestors, and glimpse some never-before-seen footage as it follows Donald Trump’s rise to power from real-estate mogul to reality TV star and then resident of the Oval Office.

Petra: Secrets of the Ancient Builders – National Geographic, 8.30pm

Take a trip to Petra, a city built over 2000 years ago, yet full of colossal buildings, tombs, temples and baths. Learn the amazing and impressive techniques used to create this luxurious city all that time ago (including one of the very first earthquake-proof structures!) Computer graphics will help recreate how it all came together.

 

Expedition Unknown – Discovery Science, 8.30pm

Two back-to-back episodes of Expedition Unknown arrive as part of Discovery Science’s Lost Worlds month of programming devoted to legends of the past. Host Josh Gates will first of all see if the latest technologies in genetic science could recreate the extinct woolly mammoth from DNA. Then he’ll delve into what we know about the Vikings to find what made them so powerful.

Your favourite film critics are back! We need our regular two cents’ worth from Margaret Pomeranz and Graeme Blundell, so thankfully there’s a new season here which finds them once again dissecting what’s about to arrive on the big screen, as well as what’s heading to our TV screens as well. Get the lowdown on what you need to be watching.

 

Long Shot – Store

When smart, sophisticated politician Charlotte (Charlize Theron) hires eccentric journalist Fred (Seth Rogen) to be her speechwriter on a presidential campaign, a high-school crush is reignited in this raunchy, reliably hilarious rom-com. With this duo in the lead, expect some witty on-screen banter, and plenty of laughs.

 

Property Brothers: 100 Episodes and Counting – Lifestyle Home, 8.30pm

The super popular ‘Property Brothers’, Drew and Jonathan Scott, have made their name helping people buy and renovate houses and turn them into dream homes. This one-hour special shares their all-time favourite clips over the past 100 episodes! It also leads into their fun new series Property Brothers: Double Down at 9.30pm, which finds them playing quizmaster and getting participants to answer real-estate related questions for prizes.

 

The Story of the Royals – Lifestyle, 8.30pm

The British royal family are a constant in our lives and this, the first in a two-part special that’s part of Lifestyle’s Royal Thursdays, takes a close look at how the new generation is changing things up, and revisits some iconic moments – births, deaths and marriages – from the history of the Windsors.

 

Destroy Paris: Hitler’s Secret Plan – HISTORY, 8.30pm

Did you know that in 1944, Adolf Hitler had a horrific plan to demolish the city of Paris? He gave orders to decimate bridges and monuments and create incredible havoc. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Paris in WWII, this special looks at how the ‘City of Light’ was saved. Did Nazi commander Dietrich von Choltitz prevent this attack as he claimed?

Virgin Australia Supercars Championship: OTR SuperSprint: The Bend – FOX SPORTS 506, LIVE from 11am

The Supercars drivers head to South Australia’s shiny new racing circuit, which only opened last year. The Bend Motorsport Park proved suitably tricky for those who tackled it in 2018 with Triple Eight Race Engineering’s Jamie Whincup and Shane van Gisbergen each winning one race. Now that teams are a little more familiar with the track – who’ll come out on top? Catch all the action over the next three days.

 

Toyota AFL Premiership: Collingwood vs Essendon – FOX FOOTY, LIVE 7pm

This is it! The siren is about to blow on the regular AFL season – with this the final round before finals kick off! It all starts tonight with a blockbuster between Collingwood and Essendon guaranteed to heat up as the two sides battle to end their season on a winning note. Other sizzling hot matches include a Richmond and Lions heart-stopper on Sunday that is simply unmissable. This is all teams’ last chance to impress – don’t miss a minute.

 

NRL Telstra Premiership: Broncos vs Rabbitohs – FOX LEAGUE, LIVE 7.58pm

After the coach and player controversy that sparked headlines in the pre-season, reputations will again be on the line when Anthony Seibold’s Broncos play host to Wayne Bennett’s Rabbitohs. In Round 8, the Rabbitohs thrashed the Broncos 38-6, so the Broncos will be keen to turn the tables. Other games to catch across the weekend include a Dragons and Roosters clash on Saturday, August 24 at 7.30pm (which you can also watch in 4K Ultra HD on Foxtel 4K) and a tussle between the in-form Raiders and Sea Eagles on Sunday, August 25 at 4pm that’s sure to be a thriller!

 

Kill Bill: Vol 1 – Masterpiece Movies, 8.30pm

It’s the first film in Quentin Tarantino’s two-part magnum opus that sees Uma Thurman’s avenging angel, ‘The Bride’, hunt down those who left her for dead  in a desert chapel four years earlier. A highlight of this film is the sequence where The Bride takes on O-Ren Ishii (Lucy Liu) in a stylised violent rampage choreographed by Hong Kong fight master Yuen Woo-Ping.

 

Okavango: River of Dreams – Nat Geo WILD, 8.30pm

Be captivated by this fascinating brand-new three-episode series documents the amazing landscape and animals of the Okavango River in southern Africa. The river has deepwater, reeds and floodplaines that supports and feeds an incredible array of wildlife. Join Dereck and Beverly Joubert as they set out on their eye-opening African adventure.

Good Trouble, s2 – FOX8, 6.30pm

The spin-off of The Fosters returns as sisters Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Mariana Adams Foster (Cierra Ramirez) continue their young adult lives in LA. This season, Mariana focuses on furthering herself personally and professionally, while Callie comes to terms with the outcome of the legal case she was heavily invested in.

 

Gurrumul – Masterpiece Movies, 10.05pm

Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu was born blind on Elcho Island, off the coast of Arnhem Land, in the Northern Territory. The multi-instrumentalist sang stories of his land both in native languages and English – winning fans all over the world before tragically passing away in 2017 at just 46. This AACTA Award-winning documentary gives great insight into his immense talent and struggle to straddle two cultures.

 

Operation Sharklift – Nat Geo WILD, 9.30pm

In the New Caledonian French territory of Nouméa, shark attacks are a constant threat. With strict marine protection laws in place, the only option is to evacuate. But how? See what’s involved in moving some massive bull sharks to a new home, a world-first under the guidance of Dr Laurent Vigliola and Australian shark biologist, Dr William Robbins.

 

The American Farm – A&E, 4.30pm

Aussies know what a hard slog it is for farmers but across the Pacific Ocean the same is true for those on the land in the US. Meet some farming families fighting to stay in business while doing all they can to keep their family unit strong. With so many adverse factors in play, will their gamble pay off?

RWC Warm-Up Match: England vs Ireland – beIN SPORTS, LIVE 12am

Another match whetting fans’ appetites for the Rugby World Cup comes your way in the wee hours this morning when England and Ireland clash. When these two teams met in the Six Nations tournament earlier this year, Eddie Jones’s men emerged victorious over their Dublin hosts. With Ireland now the visitors, and keen for revenge – will this be their moment?

 

Pose, s2 – FOX SHOWCASE, 9.30pm

It’s been a brilliant sophomore season for this Ryan Murphy-created drama that not only revels in the glamour of the New York ballroom scene, but also pulls on the heartstrings with some emotional storylines. Tonight’s season finale is sure to be huge. Thankfully, a third outing has been green lit, so there will be more to come! If you’ve missed this acclaimed must-see series, stream all episodes on demand.

 

Supergirl, s1-4 marathon – Binge, from 9am

The DC Comics Universe of superhero shows continues to expand but Kara (Melissa Benoist) – aka Supergirl – was among the first to fall to Earth four years ago. With the fifth season starting on FOX8 in October now is the time to get across all the happenings in National City. This series, with its rollicking special effects and fantastic ‘big bad’ villians is always compelling.

 

Cycling: Vuelta A España – Eurosport, LIVE 2am

Set the alarm to catch day one of the Vuelta a España, with riders beginning the challenging 3200km route that includes eight uphill finishes and some relentlessly tough stages. They’ll ease in with a flat 18km team time-trial from Salinas de Torrevieja to Torrevieja. But you’ll need to keep watching until mid September to see who’ll emerge victorious when it winds up in Madrid. Eurosport will be presenting all stage coverage live and ad break free.

 

Inside the Factory, s4B – Lifestyle Food, 8.30pm

Food manufacturing uses some truly inventive machinery. Tonight, co-host Gregg Wallace is in Italy at an enormous factory where they produce 400,000 frozen pizzas a day using an amusing looking machine that precisely cuts wobbling lengths of pepperoni into 2mm-thick slices. Also covered in the coming weeks are favourites beer, cheese and coffee. Bon appétit!

 

Decade of Danger – Discovery Channel, 7.30pm

For the armchair warriors out there Discovery Channel has pulled together some of the most memorable events to appear in some of its hit series, from adrenaline-filled street races to Mother Nature showing who’s boss. Catch some thrilling moments from shows such as Street Outlaws, Deadliest Catch, Gold Rush: Parker’s Trail, Bering Sea Gold and Naked and Afraid.
