Week 36 delivered another fascinating ratings battle between Seven and Nine.

Nine won the primary channel race by .1 of a percentage point; however, in what is becoming a familiar story, they lost the overall network race to Seven due to the ongoing underperformance from their multi-channels. (full channel data below)

Week 36 will be remembered for the premiere and likely demise of highly promoted cooking format Plate Of Origin.

The Sunday launch featured 3 thousand years of Chinese cooking history competing against some Australian mashed potatoes. The result was unsurprising, and viewers were left unimpressed by a 90-minute episode that offered little tension or originality.

  • Sunday – 965k national (667k metro)
  • Monday – 734k (510k)
  • Tuesday – 594k (419k)

The Block is continuing to be a Sunday night powerhouse for Nine securing the title of most-watched entertainment program for the week. Ratings softened as the week progressed, but the network would still be happy and full of confidence audience will build as the series progresses.

  • Sunday (Room Winners) – 1.750mil national (1.168mil metro)
  • Sunday – 1.279mil (943k metro)
  • Monday – 1.018mil (744k)
  • Tuesday – 942k (692k)

10 found itself finishing in fourth place again this week despite a solid performance from The Masked Singer. Monday’s episode averaged 1.007 million viewers nationally (729k metro). That figure increased to 1.291 million viewers nationwide (938k metro) for the reveal portion of the show.

Wednesday night’s episode of The Bachelor featured one of the most absurd moments in television history (seriously, watch the video below) as a highly passionate Osher Gunsberg informed a somewhat dumbstruck Locky Gilbert the program was heading into lockdown. The episode rated 735k (571k metro) while the Thursday offering featuring ‘zoom dating’ achieved 724k (561k metro).

The two episodes also topped VPM catchup ratings with 106k on Wednesday and 87k for the Thursday episode on 10play.

Gogglebox on Thursday evening had a national audience of 800k (604k metro). Have You Been Paying Attention did even better with 1.039mil (766k metro). Both programs serve as a reminder to programmers you don’t always need to invest millions on shiny reality formats to keep viewers entertained in big numbers.
