In an explosive new true crime series, investigative journalist Debi Marshall explores one of Australia’s most sensational murders – the case of the Lawyer in the Freezer.

But as she searches for the truth, Debi’s investigation spirals into a horrifying web of abductions, serial killings and cover-ups linked to the highest echelons of society.

With far reaching repercussions, including several 30-year court suppression orders being lifted, Debi Marshall Investigates Frozen Lies is a must-watch, locally produced series premiering exclusively on Foxtel this September – available to stream on demand or watch on Crime + Investigation.

In 1979, the case of the Lawyer in the Freezer rattled Adelaide’s legal profession to its core.  Flamboyant, gay, criminal barrister Derrance Stevenson was found sealed in his kitchen’s deep freeze, having been shot in the back of the head.  His young lover David Szach, just 19 years old, was convicted of murder and served 14 years in prison.

But for 40 years David has fiercely maintained his innocence.  Now, with his appeal soon to be heard, David wants Walkley Award-winning author Debi Marshall to re-examine his case and what he claims is a gross miscarriage of justice.

Debi’s determination to fight for justice for victims and their families started after she helped track down the killer of her own partner in 1992.  Debi’s emotionally raw and confronting story is also told across the series.

With the help of FBI-trained criminal profiler Kris Illingsworth, Debi begins to peel back the layers of Derrance Stevenson’s double life to reveal a grimy world of organised paedophilia and pornography.  In doing so, she comes across a series of unsolved murders committed by a shadowy network known colloquially as ‘The Family’. Despite the horrifying scale of crimes, only one perpetrator has ever been brought to justice.

As her investigation closes in, Debi goes behind bars to confront convicted Family killer member Bevan Spencer von Einem – the first journalist to do so in 30 years.  And in an incredible twist, she successfully overturns decades-old court suppression orders to reveal the names of important individuals mentioned in the von Einem trial.

Jim Buchan, Foxtel Group General Manager, Factual, said:

“Our latest true crime series is as timely as it is confronting. A seemingly straightforward case that has revealed so much more. We often believe these kinds of shocking crime stories don’t happen here in Australia. By exposing their existence we begin to find a truth in our collective awareness.  An awareness that can begin to improve our society and hopefully help in preventing these possibilities reoccurring again.

“We’re lucky to have found such an intrepid investigator in Debi Marshall who, having lived and helped solve her own crime story, is driven by a profound sense of the importance of getting justice. Thank you also to our producing partners Media Stockade who’ve done an amazing job, as well Screen Tasmania.”

From the sleepy streets of Adelaide to the dusty moonscape of Coober Pedy and finally, to the azure waters of the Adriatic Coast, Debi leaves no stone unturned to reveal the truth of who killed Derrance Stevenson – and why.

Produced by Media Stockade exclusively for Foxtel, with funding from Screen Tasmania.

Debi Marshall Investigates Frozen Lies is a 5x60 minute documentary series available to stream on demand or watch on Crime + Investigation from Tuesday, September 24 at 8.30pm AEST.
