PREACHING TO THE CONVERTED

These days in Australia, and other western countries, isn’t it a given that we make our own choices about our sexuality? Not only that, but whatever those decisions, isn’t it guaranteed that they will be respected and supported? Surprisingly the answer is often no. Some fundamentalist churches still actively preach that homosexuality is a sin, and they think a bizarre mix of prayer and threat is the way to fix it. As Sarah Abo reports in a special 60 MINUTES investigation, a form of gay conversion therapy continues to be practised on mainly young Australians who have been deemed “broken” by church ministers and counsellors. But shamefully, far from doing God’s work, these people are causing lifelong damage.

BACKSTREET MEN

At about the time the members of One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer were becoming heartbeats, the Backstreet Boys were already heartthrobs all over the world. And boy, were they big. BSB were the undisputed daddy of boy bands. Girls everywhere – reporter Allison Langdon included – and even a good number of blokes loved them, along with their sweet pop ballads and catchy vocal harmonies. The group sold more than 130 million albums, but then they broke more hearts when they went quiet for quite a few years. But now the Backstreet Boys, or Backstreet “Men” if you prefer, are back.

JENI’S ARMY

What Jeni Haynes endured as a young girl is unthinkable. Shocking abuse inflicted by her evil father. That she even survived is remarkable, but how she survived is truly extraordinary. Jeni’s brain conjured up more than 2000 different personalities, an army of psychological soldiers she used to protect herself from the pain. It was a fight for survival that turned into a fight for justice. And now, at long last, the battle has been won.
