Carl Barron sits down with Andrew Denton on INTERVIEW
ANDREW DENTON’S INTERVIEW: CARL BARRON
Two people, two chairs, one conversation, no gimmicks
Carl Barron is Australia’s most successful, yet in some ways least known comedian. He can fill any room in the country. On his last tour he quietly sold out the 2500 seat State Theatre in Sydney 17 times, then followed up by playing the Qudos Bank Arena across town, which holds more than 10,000. Not bad for one man and one microphone.
His CV includes: former roof tiler, air guitar champion, bird lover and mentor of the Queensland rugby league team, but his real skills are two-fold. One, being incredibly funny on stage. And two, otherwise managing to avoid attention.
You don’t see Carl on comedy panel shows. You don’t see him in the social pages. He almost never does interviews or media appearances. He’s not really fussed about social media. He is to self-promotion what Donald Trump is to modesty.
Which is what makes this rare conversation with Andrew even more exciting. It’s a chance to find out what’s actually going on inside the head of this fascinating comic, an Australian enigma, a man who hides in plain sight.
ANDREW DENTON’S INTERVIEW airs Tuesday July 16 at 9pm on Seven. Catch up on 7plus.
