Following months of controversy over the lack of Black representation within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), NBC has today announced they will not air the Golden Globes in 2022, for the first time in 26 years.

It all began in February, when the LA Times released an article questioning the organisation’s financial practices, and exposed that the HFPA had not had a new Black member since Meher Tatna in 2002, despite having 87 members.

This saw Time’s Up launch a social media campaign, supported by the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Shonda Rhimes, and Alyssa Milano.

Hosts of the 2021 ceremony, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey even mentioned it in their opening monologue (2:40 in video below).

This year’s Globes saw a decline in audiences, with only 6.9 million viewers tuning in, compared with 18.32 million last year. However, with all large-scaled award shows experiencing a decline in viewers in 2021, it is unclear whether the controversy in the lead-up impacted the Globes individually.

Don’t expect to see The Golden Globes back on NBC next year, with the network issuing an ultimatum, and breaking a 26-year tradition, stating they will not air the ceremony next year.

“We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform, however, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.

As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organisation executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

Since this statement by NBC, the HFPA has announced a reform plan timeline, detailing step-by-step action that is being taken to address concerns, beginning last week, saying:

“Regardless of the next air date of the Golden Globes, implementing transformational changes as quickly – and as thoughtfully – as possible remains the top priority for our organization.”

Time’s Up President and CEO, Tina Tchen, said:

“This is a defining moment for Hollywood. Today, we have the opportunity to recognize that, by speaking up against one powerful but deeply flawed awards system, we can begin to reimagine a more equitable industry.”

However, it is not just NBC cutting ties, but other entertainment entities, and A-list stars, are also taking a stand. Tom Cruise has reportedly returned his three Golden Globe Awards to the HFPA headquarters, which he won for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia; and streaming giant, Netflix, has declared they will not work with the HFPA until the issues are rectified, with Chief Content Officer, Ted Sarandos, saying:

“Today’s vote is an important first step, however, we don’t believe these proposed new policies — particularly around the size and speed of membership growth — will tackle the HFPA’s systemic diversity and inclusion challenges, or the lack of clear standards for how your members should operate. So we’re stopping any activities with your organization until more meaningful changes are made.

We know that you have many well-intentioned members who want real change — and that all of us have more work to do to create an equitable and inclusive industry, but Netflix and many of the talent and creators we work with cannot ignore the HFPA’s collective failure to address these crucial issues with urgency and rigor.”

Amazon Studios has since followed suit, boycotting the HFPA and Golden Globe Awards until the controversy is resolved.

It is unclear at this stage whether the Golden Globes will proceed in 2022 on a different network.
