The Guardian reports the move will result in significant savings on the program’s travel budget as the majority of guests are flown in and accommodated overnight. Producers are hopeful the move will allow for greater flexibility and responsiveness to news events, given that 70% of the program’s regular panellists are based in Canberra.

The program’s host, David Speers, moved back to Canberra from Melbourne last year, and the deputy director of ABC News, Gavin Fang, said that the move to the federal capital made sense given the program’s focus on federal politics.

The executive producer of Insiders, Sam Clarke, will remain in Melbourne and fly to Canberra each week for the show. The move is also expected two impact two ABC Melbourne production jobs.

While Insiders will be making the move to Canberra, a spokesperson for the ABC has confirmed to TV Blackbox that Sunday morning sports panel program Offsiders will remain in production from the broadcaster’s Melbourne studios for the foreseeable future. The two programs currently share studio production resources.

ABC News confirmed the Insiders move, stating that Canberra is where Australia’s national decisions are made, and where most Insiders guests and panelists live and work. The spokesperson added that it made sense for the program to be in Canberra, given its proximity to Parliament House, the press gallery, the public service, the diplomatic corps, and defence.

Insiders is the only ABC news and current affairs show that has grown its audience since 2019, and it has a strong catch-up audience on iview after broadcast. The program’s post-federal election special episode in 2020 set records with a first-run audience of 1.2 million viewers and a total audience of 1.4 million, making it the most-watched morning show on Australian TV.

  1. I’ve been advised that there will be a decent cost saving in running Insiders from Canberra, and that’s great. What I don’t see is any improvement in content or quality. 🤷🏻‍♀️
