After an illustrious tenure spanning over two decades, Stephen Tate, Paramount Australia and New Zealand’s Head of Entertainment & Factual Programming, is bowing out of the network.

His departure marks the culmination of one of the most sustained and fruitful runs for any executive in the Australian commercial broadcasting sector.

Tate’s fingerprints can be found all over some of Network 10’s and subsequently parent company Paramount ANZ’s most enduring and iconic television franchises. Shows like “Australian Idol,” “Big Brother,” and “Australian Survivor” owe their Australian versions’ success and cultural imprint to Tate’s knack for identifying formats with the potential to resonate with local audiences. His acumen has not just earned high ratings, but also transformed these franchises into meme-worthy cultural touchstones.

While he’s a household name for reality and entertainment formats, Tate’s portfolio is no one-trick pony. He has also been the shepherd for many award-winning comedy and factual series that have won critical acclaim.

Programs like “Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation” and “Todd Sampson’s Body Hack” thrived under his direction. Tate was also instrumental in managing live event programming, most notably the AACTA and ARIA Awards, elevating them to must-watch annual events.

Beverley McGarvey, Executive Vice President, Chief Content Officer & Head of Paramount+, offered nothing but effusive praise for the outgoing executive. McGarvey highlighted Tate’s relentless creative energy and passion that extended beyond content creation to include significant contributions in talent casting. Under Tate’s watch, many of the faces Australians invite into their living rooms each evening became household names.

This monumental departure comes hot on the heels of another significant exit announcement from Paramount ANZ: Rick Maier, a long-serving Drama boss, will transition to a Creative Advisor role in 2024. These high-profile shifts signal a transformative period for the network and the Australian media industry at large.

For Tate, the separation from the company is bittersweet. While he is eager for his “next adventure,” he emphasized that the relationships he’s built during his Paramount tenure are what he cherishes most. He singled out the “deep and enduring friendships” forged within the organization and the broader Australian production community.

Tate will make his official exit from the company this Friday, September 1. As he departs, he leaves a significant void, not just within the corridors of Paramount ANZ but also in the broader landscape of Australian television.
