BBC Earth is gearing up to celebrate Earth Day 2023 with a series of documentaries that explore and showcase the beauty of nature.

The week-long celebration will feature programming that highlights the science behind some of nature’s fascinating behaviours, as well as the individuals dedicated to preserving the natural world.

Starting on Monday, April 17 at 7.30pm, Earth Week will premiere with The Green Planet, a spectacular series that showcases the interconnected world of plants. Presented by Sir David Attenborough, the series unveils new behaviour, emotional stories and surprising heroes that exist in a magical hidden world. With the help of specialist cameras, the series captures the amazing secret lives of plants.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, Spectacular Earth, a double episode that premieres in Australia for the first time, takes viewers closer than ever before to some of the world’s most stunning natural phenomena. Breakthrough scientific knowledge and cutting-edge filming techniques allow viewers to experience the thrill of getting up close and personal with some of the most beautiful spectacles in the world.

From specialist jet-ski cameras that ride giant waves in Portugal, to drones that fly into Guatemala’s most explosive volcanoes, and ultra-slow-motion footage that captures thousand-foot-long lightning bolts in Arizona, viewers will be amazed at the beauty of our planet.

On Thursday, Exploration Volcano, the Australian premiere, takes centre stage. In this series, Chris Horsley, a volcano specialist, explorer and daredevil, takes a group of reluctant documentary filmmakers all over the globe, responding to volcanic eruptions that wreak havoc and threaten communities. From rebel-held jungles in Congo to lava-scorched towns in the Canary Islands, and from Iceland’s unmistakable glacial plains to Italy’s smoking archipelagos, each episode features the team tackling unique but volatile terrain.

The Age of Nature will air on Saturday, exploring our relationship with nature, our impact on it, how it works, and how we can begin to restore the balance for life on Earth. Finally, A Perfect Planet, presented by Sir David Attenborough, reveals how our planet is perfectly set up to nurture life.

Throughout the week, viewers can also enjoy their favourite BBC Earth series, including Blue Planet I, The Secret Life of the Sun, Earth’s Natural Wonders, Reef Rescue and Climate Change: The Facts.

Earth Week premieres every evening at 7.30pm on weekdays and at 6pm on the weekend, with episodes available to stream on demand after premiere.

Viewers can catch all the action on the BBC Earth channel from Monday, April 17 at 7.30pm available through Foxtel and Fetch.
