Australia’s worst-kept TV secret is finally confirmed—Channel 10 has pulled the plug on The Project after weeks of swirling rumours.

The network confirmed news of the show ending today, with the final episode will air June 27, marking the end of an era for the long-running current affairs panel show.

The axe falls after 16 years and 4,500 episodes, with Channel 10 immediately unveiling a revamped schedule to launch from June 30 – local news to remain at 5pm (up 12% year-on-year), a new national current affairs hour at 6pm, and Deal or No Deal shifting to 7pm.

A joint statement provided by Network 10 and Roving Enterprises reads:

“Network 10 will be introducing a revised early evening program schedule later this month.”

“At the core of the changes will be an expansion of Network 10’s successful news coverage, with the launch of a new national one-hour 6pm news, current affairs and insights program six days a week to complement 10’s one-hour 5pm local news bulletins.”

“This reflects the successful growth in audiences to Network 10 local news bulletins and coverage. Our focus continues to be on serving our free-to-air audiences with more of the content they are increasingly watching.”

Deal or No Deal will move to the new time of 7pm.”

“As a result of the changes, The Project will air for the last time on Friday, June 27, ending an incredible run of almost 16 years and more than 4,500 episodes.”

The statement further went on to say:

“The impact that The Project has had on the media and entertainment industry, countless careers, as well as on Australian society and culture, cannot be overstated.”

“We would like to thank those in front of and behind the cameras who have made The Project the success it has become over the years, and we are proud that so many presenters and regular guests have become household names in Australia.”

“Thank you to the hosts who have graced the desk over the years and of course the current hosts Sarah Harris, Waleed Aly, Georgie Tunny, Hamish Macdonald, Sam Taunton, Susie Youssef and Rove McManus.”

“For the hard-working team still involved in delivering The Project, both at Network 10 and Roving Enterprises, we say a heartfelt thank you. ”

Creator Craig Campbell said he “could not have dreamed” of the show’s impact 16 years ago, calling it a “privilege” to have raised lifesaving funds, showcased Australian talent, and delivered positivity to primetime.

“This news will hit our extraordinary team hard”

he added.

As TV Blackbox reported over the weekend, we understand select staff were briefed about the show ending late last week, with most employees – who are contracted through Roving Enterprises rather than Network 10 – learning their fate at today’s 11:30am meeting.

The cancellation leaves dozens of production staff, crew, and on-air talent facing an uncertain future in Melbourne’s already competitive media market – a further blow to the city’s production sector following years of industry consolidation that has seen networks centralize their operations.

The network’s extended silence on The Project’s fate only fueled speculation in recent weeks, but today’s confirmation slams the door on one of Australian TV’s most enduring—and, in recent years, embattled—shows.

TV Blackbox understands further announcements about the replacement news & current affairs program will be made later this week.

Note: A previous version of this article included details about the show’s format that were based on information provided at the time that we believed to be correct at the time of publishing, but have since proven to be inaccurate. TV Blackbox did attempt to contact Network 10 for comment.

  1. About time this show gets the axe. The Project used to be good back in the early days but now it has gone very stale and boring. The jokes have gone way too flat and its time that this show is put to pasture. The ratings have gone on a downward trend since 2015.
Same for the Footy Show. The show has gone downhill when Hughesy, Maddern, Hutchison have joined the show and has never recovered.

  2. With all the other rubbish they schedule, this was one of the few programs i go to daily. The complainers here are obviously not watching – so they should just go away with their upthemselves negativity

  3. It’s like a ghost wandering around the house because it doesn’t know it’s dead yet
    Been dead for years

    • Speaking of ghosts, there have been rumours that a small ghost has been seen wandering around various departments of Channel 10. Strangely, the ghost appears to be wearing some sort of refashioned art-smock like we used to have in primary school…only much longer as befits your classical ghost, albeit a smallish one.
The apparition is seen mostly in legal and on one occasion, in the studio where The Project is presented.
It presents as a somewhat forlorn and dejected spirit, clutching a sheaf of papers and sometimes heard moaning plaintively, “Is this one OK? ” and “What about this one?” and “Or this one?”
The spectre is mostly harmless though approach at your own peril.

  4. They never saw the need to communicate with their audience. Like millennials they mumbled to each other. Waleed was the worst. No projection. No enunciation. Here I am gazing at my navel sort of stuff.

  5. Thank god, this narcissistic shit show is finally coming to end. What will the Woke do, now their favourite show is soon to be permantly off our airwaves.🤣

  6. Yeah, they just can’t help themselves. Had to change channels again when they put on some guy supporting the Palestinians. Learn to read the room.

  7. Please keep comments respectful. The end of a live TV show means real people — producers, crew, and creatives — are out of work. Whether you watched it or not, there’s nothing to celebrate. Offending or insensitive posts will be moderated.

    • TV Blackbox well with respect , so many are so happy this garbage is going the way it should have gone long ago .

    • Surely we can vent our spleen (yeah, I know social media is the place for that) in a satirical vein. And in a serious one too.

The Project was one of the most left-leaning shows on commercial TV. They championed many of the leftist causes that have contributed to the culture wars. Ten, being an Aussie stablemate of American CBS/Paramount, was somewhat of a conduit into Australia of some of their less-than-stellar cultural phenomenon.
I remember nearly choking on my G@T some years ago when Lisa Wilkinson was waxing lyrical about the CardiB song, WAP. I beg your pardon. WAP? An acronym that I will let you google. Be careful though.
I could just imagine the families watching and the kids asking Mum and Dad what is a WAP?

Another segment that remains hotly in my mind was the supposedly balanced interview with Red Pill documentary maker, Cassie Jaye.
Respect, huh? The panel showed her no respect. Rather, they were rude and totally disrespectful as the documentary relating to men’s rights appeared not to align with their views, thoughts and ideas.
They interrupted the few replies she managed to get in, talked over her and as it transpired, admitted to not even watching the entire documentary.
Talking about sacrificing a guest, any guest, for a few rating points.
Is that what the Project calls respect?

    • TV Blackbox it use to be better till the CBS took over it went to shit after joining the left wing club use to poke fun of the news when it 1st started should of bern axed long time ago

  8. Well, Halleluiah and Amen to that!
A garland of garlic, bible, holy water, wooden stakes, salt and silver bullets should be kept in a discreet and accessible place. Perhaps in Denham Hitchcock’s dressing room, under the big round mirror that has all the lights around it.

  9. Respect is a two way Street, The Project Panel were very rude to people who didn’t fit their agenda!!
