Earlier this week, TV Blackbox’s Rob McKnight joined Joshua Fox on the popular MAFS Funny podcast to discuss the future of Married at First Sight as the show faces scrutiny from NSW Police and SafeWork NSW.
The investigations follow reports that MAFS groom Paul Antoine punched a wall during an off-camera argument with Carina Mirabile, raising concerns about on-set safety and duty of care by producers and production company EndemolShine Australia.
With investigations underway into the hugely popular, top-rating Channel 9 reality series, McKnight weighs in on whether the juggernaut can recover from the controversy—spoiler: it hasn’t hurt the show… yet.
“It’s number one, and nothing comes close”

Highlights from Rob McKnight’s MAFS Funny chat:
On the show’s dominance:
“It’s Married at First Sight first and daylight second. Nothing even comes close except news-based programming. Married at First Sight is easily number one.”
On potential ratings fatigue:
“I just wonder whether there is a bit of fatigue. The show goes on for so long, and it’s on so many nights a week. The dinner parties are a big drawcard, but I do think people are struggling to keep up with the various storylines.”
On whether the show is in trouble:
“Married at First Sight is not in any trouble. In fact, Nine’s new CEO, Matt Stanton, has said it’s the biggest show we have. It’s also one of the most profitable parts of the business.”
On the show’s format and appeal:
“For anyone thinking that Married at First Sight might change its tone or format, I don’t think so. People have stopped caring about finding real love—it’s almost a pantomime now. It’s all about the drama.”
On advertisers sticking with the show:
“I don’t think brands feel they’re being damaged by association. They’re promoting their products to a massive audience. That said, if a major scandal broke out, that could change everything.”
The show’s creator, Joshua Fox, is a former producer for Kyle & Jackie O and the author of the best-selling book What Are You Into?. He continues to captivate audiences with his sharp commentary on the hit reality series.
Fox’s MAFS Funny podcast keeps gaining momentum, recently securing a deal with Nova Podcasts as it continues to grow in popularity.
