Matthew Russell has been appointed as the new Executive Producer of Today, with Michael Kersnovske confirmed as the new Executive Producer of Weekend Today.

Matthew Russell, who has served as the Executive Producer of Weekend Today since May 2022, will now take on the top role for the flagship Today show, hosted by Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo.

Insiders at the network first confirmed the news to TV Blackbox this morning, with a Nine spokesperson later confirming Matthew Russell’s appointment as Executive Producer of Today, along with Michael Kersnovske being named the new EP of Weekend Today.

Outgoing EP, Kendall Bora is leaving her role to head up Nine’s US Bureau, where she will join her husband, former Weekend Sunrise and Channel 7 presenter Matt Doran, as he looks to expand his work in documentary series production in the States.

The Today show has faced significant challenges recently, including the sacking of sports presenter Alex Cullen over a $50,000 payment from billionaire Adrian Portelli, and the subsequent appointment of Danika Mason as part of the ongoing team shakeup.

The weekend version of Today has also faced its own issues, with the mystery departure of Sophie Walsh after just 6 months in the role, and the subsequent quiet confirmation last week of Alison Piotrowski as co-host alongside Clint Stanaway.

The news of Russell’s departure from Weekend Today was also mentioned at the end of Sunday’s broadcast, with Clint Stanaway noting that the EP didn’t want it mentioned, but was “putting on his big boy pants” and heading to the big show.

The Today Show airs weekdays from 5:30am, with Weekend Today from 7:00am on Channel 9 and 9Now
