In more developments surrounding changes to news bulletins today, Channel 9 has confirmed the immediate axing of their 9 News Darwin bulletin, with the Gold Coast service also impacted by these changes.
It is understood that around 11 people who work on the weeknight news bulletins have been impacted by this development today, however most will be redeployed into other position with limited redundancies as a result of these changes.
As previously reported by this site, the network has confirmed that one crew including a reporter and camera operator will remain in Darwin to cover and shoot local news stories in the Northern Territory, now aimed at a national audience.
A Nine spokesperson telling TV Blackbox:
“Nine has today communicated some regional TV News changes to its team as part of its strategic transformation program.”
“These difficult yet necessary decisions ensure Nine is able to withstand external challenges, while maintaining a commitment to both the Northern Territory and Gold Coast regions.”
“9News remains the only free-to-air and bespoke news bulletin on the Gold Coast, while in Darwin we will retain a reporter and camera operator on the ground to tell the Territory’s stories to a national audience.”
“Through redeployment opportunities and current vacancies, Nine has significantly reduced the number of people impacted by this decision and we are supporting those employees through this process.”
Presented by Paul Murphy since 2023, the Nine owned station returned to a local Darwin bulletin in late 2020, then presented by journalist and presenter Paul Taylor, who later went on to co-host the 9 Gold Coast News bulletin alongside Eva Milic.

As part of the changes announced today, it is understood that 9 Gold Coast News will now be presented by a single newsreader, with current presenters Eva Milic and Paul Taylor sharing these responsibilities throughout the week.
Since mid last year, Paul Murphy has regularly been absent from 9 News Darwin, with a rotating roster of Channel 9 Brisbane reporters, including Wendy Kingston, Alison Ariotti, Josh Bavas, and even former presenter Paul Taylor, stepping in to present the bulletin.
The NT bulletin has been marred by many changes over the years, including the departure of Executive Producer David Richardson in December following a complaint related to a Christmas work party, just months after his October appointment last year.
Presentation of the bulletin has also changed several times, including the relocation of its production to Nine’s Brisbane Mt Coot-tha studios in an effort to centralise operations and cut costs amidst the rising expense of providing local news.
It is understood that viewers in the Northern Territory will now receive the Queensland news bulletin throughout the week, with that bulletin previously being shown in the NT on weekends.

Does this mean Darwin stories on Today or something?
Very sad for people in the NT. ABC only now.
Stephen James Stories of significance from the NT will likely be seen across all of Nine’s bulletins and current affairs programs.
