Creator Joe Brumm delivers delightful news, with a hint of sadness.
Ludo Studios, the production house behind modern kids animated mega-hit BLUEY today delivered news of BLUEY THE MOVIE coming in 2027 to cinemas, then streaming on Disney+ and ABC iview. The movie will be made by BBC Sudios and the Walt Disney Company.
Written and directed by Bluey creator Joe Brumm, the film is a Ludo Studio production in collaboration with BBC Studios. Delivering the same charm and humor that made the television series a global phenomenon, the movie will continue the adventures of Bluey, a loveable, inexhaustible, blue heeler dog, who lives with her mum, dad and her little sister, Bingo.
Joe Brumm, creator of Bluey, said:
“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought ’Bluey’ deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new ’Bluey’ story to the big screen.”
Daley Pearson and Charlie Aspinwall, Co-Founders and Directors, Ludo Studio, said:
“Over the past eight years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary team of more than fifty artists and producers whose talent, dedication, and creativity have shaped ’Bluey’ into the beloved series it is today. Their work has paved the way for this incredible opportunity to expand ’Bluey’’s world onto the big screen. We’re excited to continue showing Queensland as a home for world-class talent and to share a new beautiful ’Bluey’ story by Joe Brumm with families around the world.”
The film will star vocal talent from the hit show including Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack as Bluey’s mum and dad, Chilli and Bandit Heeler, and music created by Bluey composer Joff Bush.
The CG animated film will be produced by award-winning animation producer Amber Naismith (Happy Feet, The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie) with Richard Jeffery returning to co-direct (’Bluey’ Series 1-3), Joe Brumm is Executive Producer alongside Justine Flynn for BBC Studios, with Charlie Aspinwall and Daley Pearson from Ludo Studio. For Disney, the film will be overseen by David Greenbaum, president of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, and his team.
Then, the sting in the tail…
Brumm delivered a second letter to fans, describing some ‘trifficult’ news.
“I always said I wouldn’t keep making the show if I thought I couldn’t make any new season as good as the last,” he wrote. “This would have been the case for me with a potential season four, so I’ve decided to take a break from my involvement in the TV series. In the event I can’t wrap my head around doing more seasons myself, The Sign will mark my TV finale for Bluey and I wrote it as such.”
Brumm goes on to reinforce that this is his decision is not an announcement about the show ending; rather an acknowledgement that his focus (and that of Ludo) will be on the film for the next couple of years.
While it does offer hope for fans that there will be more Bluey episodes in a possible season four, it’s difficult to see how Bluey can continue without Brumm at the creative helm. He is the beating heart of the show and while the rest of the creative team can and will do a stunning job it is as simple as: there is no Bluey without Joe.
Time will tell. Now, c’mon kids, let’s go get some Chinese takeway.
