Stan Prepares Festive Release with New Aussie Comedy Nugget Is Dead: A Christmas Story

Stan is gearing up for the release of its latest original Christmas film, Nugget Is Dead: A Christmas Story, starring Vic Zerbst and Jenna Owen. The unique comedy-drama is the first feature film by the duo, blending humour and sentiment as it explores complex family relationships amid the festive season.

This holiday feature, produced by Easy Tiger in collaboration with CBS Studios, is the latest addition to Stan’s growing line-up of original Christmas films, promising a distinctively Australian take on the holiday movie genre. Following popular releases like A Sunburnt Christmas, Christmas on the Farm, and Christmas Ransom, Nugget Is Dead is set to resonate with viewers looking for localised, offbeat holiday storytelling.

The narrative follows Steph Stool (played by Zerbst) who is forced to abandon her well-planned Christmas with her boyfriend’s family when her childhood dog, Nugget, falls ill. Returning to her coastal hometown, she faces the chaos of her eccentric family. Over the week leading up to Christmas, each family member must confront Nugget’s ailing health and the sentimental ties that bind them.

The inspiration for the film came from Owen’s personal experience. Reflecting on a Christmas when her own family dog passed away, Owen found this moment of family closeness and shared loss fertile ground for storytelling. The writer-actor commented,

“Nugget is Dead is partially a love letter to my family and my upbringing in Wollongong… This movie is about coming home, to your family, your dog, but also to who you really are.”

Alongside Zerbst and Owen, the film features an impressive ensemble of Australian talent, including Gia Carides (playing Steph’s mother, Jodie Stool), Damien Garvey, Mandy McElhinney, and Steve Rodgers. The supporting cast rounds out with beloved actors such as Tara Morice, Alec Snow, Ed Oxenbould, and Kerry Armstrong, adding to the film’s homage to classic Australian comedy.

Zerbst and Owen are no strangers to humour; their background in sketch comedy has attracted over 90 million views online, and their work at SBS with The Feed has cemented their reputation for satire.

Nugget Is Dead marks a shift from short-form comedy to feature film, allowing them to explore deeper themes within a familiar Australian context. Reflecting on their creative collaboration, Zerbst and Owen credited their shared experiences during university and the years spent crafting sketches together as foundational to their debut film venture.

The film is directed by Imogen McCluskey, written by Zerbst and Owen, and produced by Naomi Just with executive production by Rob Gibson and Ian Collie. Cailah Scobie and Donna Chang executive produce on behalf of Stan, while international distribution is handled by Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Stan’s investment in unique, Australian Christmas tales continues to expand, with Nugget Is Dead: A Christmas Story adding a new dimension to the holiday season line-up.

The film premieres on 21 November 2024 on Stan, offering audiences a heartfelt, humorous take on the realities of family life and holiday reunions.
