Amazon’s Australian adaptation of The Office has recorded the most successful debut for any locally produced title on Prime Video, setting a new benchmark for Australian Originals on the platform.

Premiering on Friday, October 18, the series saw the largest opening weekend viewership for any Australian title in Prime Video history, underscoring a significant response both domestically and internationally. In Australia, The Office has continued to rank as the #1 show on Prime Video, while also securing the top spot in New Zealand and Singapore.

The series has made waves in international markets as well, placing in the top three in 37 countries, including Canada, the top five in 65 countries, such as Germany, and the top ten in 102 countries, including the UK.

This series has not only reinforced Prime Video’s commitment to Australian content but also exemplified the broad appeal of the The Office franchise’s signature style. Sarah Christie, head of Australian Originals for Amazon MGM Studios, acknowledged the success and the international resonance of the series:

“Since 2019, Prime Video has commissioned 30 local originals, building a reputation for delivering an entertaining and diverse catalogue of Aussie shows. We are so proud of The Office and thrilled to see Hannah Howard and her team at Flinley Craddick resonate so strongly with Australian and international audiences.”

The Australian Office, produced in collaboration with a local team, offers a fresh perspective on the classic mockumentary style first popularised by the UK version created by Ricky Gervais. In this iteration, Felicity Ward plays the lead role of Hannah Howard, a bumbling but well-intentioned boss attempting to manage her employees with often misguided strategies.

This marks a significant milestone in the franchise’s 20-year history, as Howard becomes the first female boss in the global series, taking her place among memorable characters like Gervais’s David Brent and Steve Carell’s Michael Scott from the U.S. version.

Set in Sydney within the fictional packaging company Flinley Craddick, this eight-part series aims to bring a distinctly Australian sensibility to the workplace comedy genre. The narrative follows Howard as she scrambles to save her branch from closure, sparked by an announcement from head office that operations will shift towards remote work.

Determined to keep her “work family” together, Howard resorts to grand promises and far-fetched goals, inadvertently plunging her staff into confusion and chaos as they struggle to keep up with her increasingly unrealistic demands.

This Australian production has achieved significant engagement across Prime Video’s extensive global audience, where subscribers in 240 countries, excluding the United States, can access all eight episodes. The adaptation’s success reflects the brand’s sustained global appeal; The Office now has adaptations in 13 countries, including France, India, Israel, and South Africa.

Much of the show’s humour lies in its locally tailored spin on the franchise’s awkward and cringe-worthy style, providing Australian audiences with a blend of familiar office dynamics and unique cultural elements. Beyond Australia, the adaptation has managed to capture attention and garner critical praise in several key markets, adding a fresh layer to the franchise’s legacy. For Prime Video, this success reaffirms the strategic importance of localised content that appeals broadly while resonating with the unique sensibilities of its home country.

All eight episodes are available to stream on Prime Video now worldwide (excluding the U.S.).
