Grand Designs Australia continues tonight with a unique architectural challenge, as husband-and-wife team Gaurav and Vish take on a deeply personal project: designing a multigenerational home for their family in Mount Waverley.
Both accomplished architects, the couple are collaborating for the first time on this ambitious build, which seeks to accommodate their aging parents from India and their young children under one roof.
The house, which embraces a modern interpretation of a traditional courtyard design, includes a self-contained ‘granny flat’ and a hidden lap pool. Central to the home’s aesthetic is its cladding – more than 9,000 terracotta tiles sourced locally will envelop the roof and walls, giving the property a distinctive look. The choice of terracotta is not only visually striking but also practical, as the material’s natural thermal properties help regulate temperature.
However, despite their architectural expertise, the couple faces significant logistical challenges. To keep the build within budget and on schedule, they have opted to use prefabricated panels for the internal walls and ceilings.
These panels, though time-efficient, are manufactured overseas, leaving the project vulnerable to international shipping delays. With a deadline looming – the family hopes to celebrate the Diwali Festival in their new home – the pressure is on.
