The Northern Territory welcomes NCIS: Sydney as the global hit series films new episodes in Darwin, promoting the region’s beauty and creating local jobs.
The Northern Territory is rolling out the red carpet for the production of NCIS: Sydney, with filming now underway in Darwin.
The popular global franchise has chosen the Top End for two of its episodes, marking a significant achievement for the region as it continues to position itself as a premier location for international film and television projects.
Earlier this year, a collaboration between Endemol Shine Australia, CBS Studios, Paramount Australia, and Screen Territory confirmed the decision to film parts of the series in the Northern Territory. The production is a direct result of the Production Attraction Incentive Program (PAIP), a scheme aimed at bringing high-profile projects to the Territory, generating economic benefits and elevating the NT’s profile on the global stage.
The influx of such productions offers substantial economic advantages, providing employment for local crews and businesses across various sectors. The local economy stands to gain from the engagement of suppliers, services, and Territory-based professionals, while the production itself enhances the skills and experience of the local screen industry.
NCIS: Sydney is the first international offshoot of the long-running NCIS franchise set outside of the United States. The series follows a combined team of U.S. NCIS Agents and the Australian Federal Police (AFP) as they investigate naval crimes. Since its debut, the show has become one of the most watched series on Paramount+ Australia and the top new series in the US during the 2023-2024 television season, attracting over 10.2 million viewers for its premiere.
Produced by Endemol Shine Australia for CBS Studios and Paramount Australia, and distributed internationally by Paramount Global Content Distribution, the show brings both creative and economic opportunities to the NT. The Territory’s striking landscapes, coupled with skilled local crews and strong government backing, make it an appealing destination for filmmakers.
The Production Attraction Incentive Program, open year-round, is designed to attract major productions to the NT by offering incentives. These projects not only boost the local economy but also promote the Northern Territory’s unique offerings to a global audience.
Jennie Hughes, Director of Screen Territory, emphasised the program’s role in facilitating this production:
“Screen Territory has been a key supporter of NCIS: Sydney, working closely with the production to ensure that filming in the NT is a seamless and rewarding experience. The Territory’s diverse locations, skilled local crews, and strong government backing make it an ideal destination for filmmakers, with NCIS: Sydney being the latest in a growing list of high-quality productions choosing the NT.”
She highlighted the broader benefits for the Territory:
“Hosting a globally recognised franchise like NCIS is a fantastic opportunity to show off all the Northern Territory has to offer – not only does it promote visitation to the NT by showcasing our incredible landscapes and culture on screen for millions to see, but it also provides valuable employment opportunities for locals and boosts the Territory’s economy.”
Sara Richardson, Head of Scripted at Endemol Shine Australia, echoed these sentiments:
“Endemol Shine Australia is delighted to be filming in the Northern Territory, showcasing the beauty of Australia’s Top End to the rest of Australia and around the world. Working with local cast and crew, as well as the 100s of extras, is always incredibly rewarding, and the community of Darwin has both welcomed and supported us, which we are so grateful for.”
Rick Maier, Creative Advisor Drama at Paramount ANZ, added:
“There is nothing more representative of our diverse landscape than the incredible Northern Territory. We are both excited and proud to see NCIS: Sydney explore this vibrant region with the brilliant support of the NT Government. Hats off for helping us showcase your phenomenal back yard to the world.”
The production of NCIS: Sydney not only brings the spotlight to the Northern Territory but also strengthens its burgeoning reputation as a destination for major international film and television projects. The local industry, bolstered by government support, stands to benefit from the opportunities generated by this high-profile production.
