Patrick Delany, CEO of Foxtel, issues an apology after a Nazi salute photo from a decade ago resurfaces.
Foxtel Group chief executive Patrick Delany has issued an apology after an image surfaced showing him performing a Nazi salute, which was published by Crikey on Sunday night.
In an internal email to staff, Delany explained that the image was taken roughly ten years ago on the set of A-League coverage, during his tenure as chief executive of Fox Sports.
According to Delany, the gesture was intended to highlight the similarity between the Nazi salute, known as the ‘Sieg Heil,’ and a hand motion commonly used by Western Sydney Wanderers fans during a well-known chant.
He acknowledged, however, that the salute, which is illegal in several Australian states and territories, including New South Wales (NSW), is
“highly offensive to the Jewish community.”
“While context does matter, it was wrong of me to demonstrate this offensive gesture,” Delany wrote. “I am deeply sorry for my actions and sincerely apologise to those who have been hurt or offended, particularly within the Jewish community.”
Reflecting on the image, Delany expressed surprise and regret:
“Since becoming aware of this photo, I have been searching my mind for any circumstance from over a decade ago where such a photo could have been taken. The image is entirely inconsistent with my values, beliefs, and family connections.”
He further stressed his stance against racism:
“Racism in all its forms is unacceptable, and I recognise the seriousness of my actions,” he said. Delany also noted that he is a signatory of the Say No to Antisemitism letter published in late 2023, reaffirming his condemnation of antisemitism in any form.
Delany also extended his apologies to any Foxtel staff who were impacted by his actions, inviting them to reach out with any questions or concerns.
It is understood that Delany has since met with representatives from the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies to personally apologise for the incident.
