Prime Video has premiered its highly anticipated Australian Original documentary, Kick Like Tayla.
From the footy field to the boxing ring, Kick Like Tayla is an exclusive, all-access documentary giving a gripping account of the emotional, physical and mental challenges that AFLW player Tayla Harris faces every day.
Kick Like Tayla is an unprecedented insight into the life of the NAB AFL Women’s Competition (AFLW) and boxing champion Tayla Harris, comprehensively chronicling the public and personal challenges this sporting star has faced in her remarkable career.
It documents her success in junior football and the excitement of being the Brisbane Lions’ first marquee AFLW player, before her move to football’s spiritual home – Victoria. In 2019, Harris became a household name after a photo of her was trolled online, sparking a national conversation about the importance of online safety and sexism experienced by female athletes.
For the first time, viewers get an insight into the toll this abuse took on Harris, why she stood up to online trolls, and how she turned the negative experience into a positive.
The documentary delves into the importance of her relationship with her family and partner Kodi Jacques, and the impact the COVID pandemic has had on her training and mental health.
Through interviews conducted over two years, Harris and her inner circle provide insight into her move from Carlton to the Melbourne Football Club and hit the best form of her AFLW career. It analyses the way her two sports – boxing and football – complement each other and where she finds her drive to succeed.
Never far from the spotlight, we see how Harris plans to use her sporting profile to empower other women, both on and off the field.
Harris said it is surreal to see the finished product and hopes the documentary sends a message to all those who underestimate women.
“I am an innately private person, but I believe that by speaking out and calling certain actions out we can incite positive change,” she said.
“This documentary is an open and honest account of my career so far, the good, bad and the indifferent. I hope it empowers young people, in particular young women, to be authentic, back themselves and chase their dreams.”
AFL General Manager of Women’s Football Nicole Livingstone said Kick Like Tayla gives insight to one of the game’s most recognisable players.
“Kick Like Tayla takes a deep dive into the world of AFLW and shines a light on what it means to be at the top of your game,” she said.
“Tayla’s achievements on and off the field are remarkable. Her honesty and personal insights in the documentary tell a beautiful story. One of determination and ambition, I’m just so proud of Tayla.”
Kick Like Tayla will premiere exclusively on Prime Video on May 27 in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, US, UK and South Africa and will launch globally on June 17.
It will be available across 240 countries and territories worldwide.
