MIES ON SCENE: BARCELONA IN TWO ACTS

ANTI-SUBURBAN ARCHITECTURE: PAOLO SOLERNI – BEYOND FORM
Genre and ground-breaking architect Paolo Soleri remains largely unknown outside of architectural circles, but his legacy as an artist, builder and urban theorist is staggering. Narrated by actor-activist Peter Coyote, Aimee Madsen’s documentary takes a close look at Soleri’s origins and lifelong labour of love: the futuristic city of Arcosanti in the unforgiving desert Phoenix, Arizona.
Inspiring a near cult-like following rivalled only by the passionate devotees of the architectural giant Frank Lloyd Wright, Soleri’s city continues to grow piece by piece; long after the death of its creator. Green before “green” and “sustainable” ever entered the world lexicon, Soleri’s lean approach was an ever-present theme throughout his life.
Soleri is the most interesting architect you’ve never heard of.
Paolo Solerni: Beyond Form (80 mins) USA 2013 (Available 9 May)

LIVING WHERE NOBODY LIVES: INHABITED
Most people think of nature parks as eco-systems uninhabited by humans–spaces reserved for wildlife, fossils, and plants. “Inhabited” shows us that people live there too. Through an in-depth exploration of all ten of Canada’s UNESCO World Natural Heritage sites, a filmmaking family introduces us to the people who call these places home and asks: what do the inhabitants want the rest of us to know?
Intimate portraits reveal ancestries, communities, families, and spiritual ties between people and places. At times ignored and forgotten, at times marginalized and even pushed away, and at other times deeply embedded in the land, for better or for worse, the people of these parks have made natural heritage their cultural heritage and the natural landscape their social environment. Their ways of life remind us that nature and culture, and that environment and society are entangled and inseparable.
Inhabited (85 mins) Canada 2022 (Available 30 May)
CURATED COLLECTION BY: VALENTINA DE AGUIRRE, EDITOR OF HABITAR
Shelter’s guest curator this May is Habitar editor Valentina De Aguire, whose collection of Shelter titles focuses on architecture working in perfect harmony with the challenges of the surrounding landscape.
“The richness of Chilean architecture is undeniable, which is why incredible projects made in our country could not be missing from this selection,”
– says De Aguirre.
“Projects that we love not because of their grandeur, but because of their ability to face the challenges of climate and territory. In addition, in this selection we include projects in South America and a couple of other surprises.”
About Habitar:
Habitar is the latest project of ED, a new magazine from Chile focused on design and architecture as tools that contribute to the quality of life, transversal in society. At ED Habitar we address the challenges we have regarding urban planning and landscape, we discover new talents, we set our sights on the international scene and we also open the doors of houses that have something to tell.
