After more than ten years behind the main desk, Paul Lobb has been let go from his long-held position at NBN News.

TV Blackbox understands weeknight newsreader for NBN News, Paul Lobb, has been axed from his position at the network after more than ten years presenting the 6:00pm news bulletin alongside Natasha Beyersdorf.

In an internal email to NBN staff obtained by TV Blackbox, Managing Director for Nine in Queensland and Northern New South Wales, Kylie Blucher, said the difficult decision to let Lobb go was made after a consolidation to NBN News’ presenting lineup.

She said this decision did not reflect Lobb’s significant contribution to NBN News which spanned for more than a decade and helped play into the success of the bulletin itself.

Blucher said:

“Paul has been front and centre in loungerooms across Northern New South Wales delivering the local, national, and international stories our audience depends on.

“Over the past decade Lobby had built an enviable relationship with our viewers based on trust and his recognised commitment to the news.”

Blucher also touched on what Lobb was like behind the camera.

“It’s not only the audience who have come to love and trust Lobby, for nearly 24 years he has always been the first one to put his hand up to lend-a-hand, support his mates, and always does it with a smile on his face.”

Beginning on January 31, 2022, Beyersdorf will share newsreading duties with Gavin Morris, who will continue presenting the weather segment for the nightly NBN News bulletin.

Blucher said:

“I have every confidence that Gavin will be embraced by the audience in this new role and alongside Natasha deliver continued success for NBN News.”

Initially employed by NBN in 1993 as trainee chyron operator/librarian, Lobb became a news journalist in 1998 for the Port Macquarie office.

He was then a back-up newsreader for several years before replacing Ray Dinneen permanently behind the desk in 2010 when Dinneen retired.

Lobb joined alongside Beyersdorf as co-newsreaders for the 6:00pm bulletin, and the pair marked their ten-year anniversary together in December, 2020.

Lobb has yet to comment on his departure.

  1. This is an absolute disgrace, channel 9 just lost a whole lot of Newcastle viewers, who’s next Natasha, or the sports reporters, which are hardly there anymore

  2. I just want to say NBN have lost the plot.
I’m unsure which direction you’re hoping to take the news, but Paul is our familiar hometown news reader, who was a wonderful, articulate, beautiful natured person.
We might as well just watch the Sydney news with people we have no connection with.
    So upset by this news.

    • My guess is we will loose our nightly local news bulletins, we’ll end up with the Sydney news. Not bloody good enough, can’t believe NBNhave done this to Lobby😡😡😡😡😛

    • One can only assume that Gavin’s salary is lower than Paul’s or this penny pinching exercise makes absolutely no sense! Paul is more than capable of providing the weather report as he’s already shown.

  3. This move is absolutely terrible. Paul Lobb should be retained by Channel 9. The likes of Karl Stevanovic should be given the axe. In comparison, Paul Lobb is respectful and considerate to viewers in his role unlike the previously mentioned reporter who is so childish and has a very false persona with a very forced laugh which is irritating. The dollars Karl Stevanovic is paid could be saved by keeping the likes of Paul Lobb and other missing reporters in the network.

How about viewer’s survey? In my opinion, Channel 9 Executive are out of touch.

  4. What on earth are you thinking????
Paul Lobb is a talented & highly respected newsreader. His unbiased & delightful presentation of the news is so professional & enjoyed by all viewers.
Let Gavin do what he does best with the weather!!!!
What stupid fool made this decision.
    I’m changing channels 😡

  5. This is disgraceful! It won’t be the same without Paul and Natasha delivering our local and world news. Shame on you Channel 9!

  6. You’ve lost me NBN, I’ll watch prime news now along with many Novocastrians. This is not Sydney. We deserve our news presented by our readers who understand our needs

  7. Newcastle is not a suburb of Sydney. Stop minimising the value of our community by reducing the local content of what we once proudly called Channel 3 . Paul Lobb deserves better and so does Newcastle

    • I agree,, what a shame ,, Paul was very good on Nine and its JUST NOT THE SAME
THEY MAY HAVE TO RECONSIDER THEIR ACTIONS

  8. I will not be watching nbn news no more .the people who make these decisions don’t even live here or know our community. Let the public vote and then the person who made the decision to let Paul lobb go will see he is much loved by all.

  9. What a disgrace Channel 9 is, how dare you axe our beloved Paul Lobb from our news room. He is a true gentleman, so kind, caring and does a wonderful job alongside Natasha. You are going to lose a lot of viewers of this stupid decision. We will go to Prime. Your loss all round. Paul you will be fine. Someone will snap you up before NBN can change its mind. I’m thinking it maybe a complete switch to Sydney rather than NBN.

    • Completely agree with the above statement – what a shame we are to lose this wonderful talent and caring man from our nightly news reporting – shame shame on you NBN

      • I am bewildered at this decision by the channel. Why on earth would you replace such a much adnired newsreader with a recognised weatherman. Paul speaks so well and those with hearing problems find it easy to read his lips, I for one will no longer watch the news on our local channel. Have a lovely Christmas paul and I know you will have no trouble in putting your talent and work ethic into another chapter in your life.

      • I do not agree with Paul Lobb being removed. Shame on you all. He must be reinstated. How must he feel? Amanda A.

  10. Well they have moved everyone to the new studio after getting rid of many behind the scenes professionals and wow can’t you see the downgrade in the broadcasts since. Sound problems, news footage not there when delivering a story, problem after problem since the move. Now this news about Paul Lobb is a disgrace. If this is the way you treat your loyal and excellent staff it will only be within a short period of time you will be forcing Sydney news and newsreaders on your loyal viewers.

    • So true Les. Still having problems with their broadcast from Honeysuckle. Not been the same since it was moved! Paul was one of the most respected newsreaders ever. He will be missed.

  11. Shame on you NBN…
Put it to a viewer vote and it would be a completely different outcome..
I hope much better opportunities are in store for you Paul..
    NBN’s loss…someone else’s gain

  12. Looks like I won’t be watching NBN News anymore….BAD move Nine Entertainment. I am sure lots of other locals will also be switching channels in protest. Penny pinching when they have a virtual monopoly re local news content is SO unnecessary. Watch us all vote with our remote control and switch channels. Make room ABC, we are coming for you, local news content or not! Protest vote!!!!

  13. Absolute disgrace to let a fine employee go who has contributed so much to NBN’s progress for many years as stated in Blucher’s explanation of this news.
It’s obvious that no matter how much you contribute to your job , you are just another number and always replaceable.
    Shame Shame Shame Blucher 😠😠😠

  14. Wrong in many aspects of Paul Lobb no longer reading the news. Will now watch ABC.It’s Newcastle not Sydney. Its all about the money never about the viewers.Let’s see how many will vote with the remote on all Nine content. You should be ashamed.

    • We watch NBN Newcastle, for the Local News. Repeat, LOCAL. Then switch to ABC. How ridiculous to replace the best newsreading team.
Don’t watch anything else on nbn, only the news.

  15. I agree 100%. This is a stupid decision. I will no longer be watching NBN. I absolutely hate the breakfast show and will not watch it because Karl is the host. He is a giant child.
On the other side of the coin Paul is a true gentleman and has a wonderful personality.

  16. What on earth are you thinking…Paul Lobb is so engaging and Curtious to his audience …
Your weird at NBN and channel 9..
For heavens sake leave things alone if they work..
Or does someone need a pay rise at NBN…

  17. I do like Gavin so good luck to him. But such a stab in the back for “the lobster” (as our family endearingly call him). Wherever he goes will be lucky to have him .

  18. Disgraceful decision I bet our local news will go and become the Sydney news.
NBN will loose viewers over this.

  19. Paul does such a great job. This is a ridiculous decision. So many viewers, including me, will not be watching NBN news. Gavin is a personality on the weather but is not as clear an announcer or as professional as Paul. This will alienate at lot of Newcastle viewers.

  20. I think Paul lobb is amazing and. Know what he is doing Why axe him let him do the. Weather please. Good luck and all the best. To Paul lobb and his family. We all
    Will miss you so. Much

  21. Can’t believe this move. Paul Lobb is a great newsreader & person. Newcastle is not a suburb of Sydney, we want local news & local people to give us this news. If we want Sydney, we can watch Sydney Channels.

  22. Disgusting news Paul Lobb is a true gentleman in many aspects of the word . A brilliant newsreader and a great partner working with Natasha. Many years experience and you have let him go how happy you must be !!!!!!!!! How devestated and humiliated must Paul feel and his family .
So annoyed with you over this matter you will never find anyone so true and respected as the man you let go Paul Lobb.

  23. Kylie Blucher should be the one to be sacked, not Paul Lobb. How out of touch is she? An extraordinarily stupid decision.

  24. It’s all about the bottom dollar isn’t it? Loyalty, longevity and familiarity are no longer valued by the bean counters. Unfortunately NBN is no longer truely our local station, it’s just a poor reflection from Sydney. I agree with another comment regarding the shambles the news bulletin has become since the move to the new studios. Has there been a restructure or have they left the work experience kids running the floor? More appalling is that it is getting worse not better! I’ve also got to comment on that ridiculous weather update they’ve inserted in the bulletin. Why would they bother? The two reports they already have are more than enough weather in an hour of news. I’ve got a news flash guys – it’s excessive and it’s not working.
I’ve already stopped watching nearly everything offered by 9. Never thought I’d have to stop watching the NBN News as well. Not a welcome move powers-that-be. Too late for Paul, maybe it’s time for some management sackings as well.

  25. Disgraceful news. Paul Lobb was great. Gavin is a just a weather man and not that great at that either ( we turn over and watch the lovely Angie on 7 when the weathers on ). Wont watch him read the whole news – over to 7 for the whole hour for us from now on.

  26. What a dead set joke!! I can’t stand Gavin and can not believe that nine have promoted this goose to the top job
    Shame on nine!!

    • Spot on Newy – can’t stand Gav and the way he drools his speech when delivering the weather – expect that the news stories will have to be cut to fit into the 1 hour it is allocated.

  27. It’s a shame to see such a likeable person get the axe from the NBN television Newsdesk because some of him is on my late grandmothers side who was my mothers mother & I more than liked her,Paul Lobb is a bit more like she was !

  28. what a joke i could swear , but i wont , the guy who made this Judgment , i think its your turn to go as you seem to have no idea about anything ,i feel i need a career change and take your job and put Paul Lobb back on , next thing you will be getting rid of Big Dog

  29. To replace a calm well spoken newsreader with a grating aussie accent is not a good decision, Lobby is our Brian Henderson RIP

  30. Lobby is one of the best newsreaders and so likeable that i can’t believe you are letting him go.
Kylie Butcher this is a disgusting move
…I know who’s head should roll

    Vote with remote….

  31. Shame, Shame, Shame. What the hell are you thinking? Paul is such a lovely guy and does his job very well so why sack him, AND right on Christmas.

  32. Paul Lobb is too good for you idiot managers of Ch 3…Paul is the same profession man as Murray Finlay was…some of these journalists they have in the country regions sound like they need their nasal passages cleaned out. Paul Lobb is in the same professional calibre as most of ABC jourbalists. Put Paul in charge of a modern day journalism school.on how to speak clearly so we can all understand and not say what was that. Get Paul.a job on an ABC programme or put him.in charge of ABC programming.

  33. This is definitely a poor choice on the part of management. Why sack a Walkley award winning journalist/reporter from a team of lesser achievement and success. Natasha and Gavin are very personable but neither have notched up the level of professionality of Paul Lobb. I wish him greater things in the future and no doubt he will succeed in whatever he chooses to do.

  34. Shame, shame shame! How dare some idiot let Paul Lobb go. How out of touch are you Channel 9?

  35. Absolute disgrace. Paul Lobb you are a super newsreader and will be missed. I will no longer watching NBN. Sack those who made this decision

  36. Sack Kylie Blucher. Keep Paul Lobb. Since moving to Honeysuckle the presentation of the news has been terrible. We were almost ready to move to Channel 7, but stayed because of the professionalism of Paul and Natasha. Sorry Natasha, we will not be watching NBN news again.

  37. What a disgrace. From a once proud, award winning local station to a very poor Channel 9 relay. This is NOT progress.

  38. No surprise that, once again Newcastle feel the slash of the cutting blade. We are not Sydney so the powers that be could not care LESS about OUR town, OUR station, OUR news. It won’t be long and there will be absolutely ZERO local content – if it doesn’t happen in Sydney then it doesn’t matter to NSW – ask other regional areas what happened to THEIR local content – Paul Lobb is, sadly, the first in OUR demise

  39. You have got to be kidding, replacing Lobby with that over annunciating excuse of a weather presenter Gav. I watch rubber gob Gav just for a laugh, considering he is on for just a few minutes but a newsreader, no way. He is too annoying not to mention Lobby was handsome and Gav is very ordinary. Soon the whole show will be aired remotely. Will not watch. Hope Lobby scores a job without backstabbers.

  40. I can’t believe that a city the size of Newcastle cannot support its own TV station. To find that what is being delivered to the people of Newcastle is all remotely controlled from outside the region is gob-smacking. It is clear from the number of technical glitches that have occurred that it is not working!
To loose Paul Lobb is a final nail in the coffin. He has constitantly shown his professionalism and has been loved by the NBN audience.
I am a proud Novocastrian and am sick of the region being shat on from afar.

  41. To me this is the beginning to the end of NBN.
Big brother 9s afternoon news I notice they use their Sydney journalists to cover news events all over the northern NSW area. To the best of my knowledge , NBN have their own journalists located throughout this region.
So 9 Sydney don’t mind the cost of travel expenses for the journo’s and camera crews to the regions, where as the local NBN journo and camera crew are basically on site??
Example yesterday 15/12 a channel 9 Sydney journo reporting in Newcastle on the Covid outbreak on site in Newcastle.
On the NBN news a local journo commenting on the Covid outbreak..
What the local journo’s not good enough for Sydney TV news?
Things that make you go Hmmm.

  42. Having moved from Sydney to Port Stephens, it was a pleasure to watch the local news presented in such a professional manner. The decision to axe Paul is disgusting. I’ll be switching as well, with no disrespect to Natasha and Gavin.

  43. You got to be kidding me just axing a great news reader as in Paul Lobb without allowing the poor bloke a chance to say good bye oh no just pack your desk belongings & go how disgraceful to the viewers of NBN 9 obviously a stupid decision without any thought by Kylie thanks a lot 😡 . The NBN news ratings will go down how about you revoke this dumb cost cutting decision?

  44. Will not be watching NBN news again. To have to listen to Gavvvvv, for an hour would send me insane.
    Bring back Paul Lobb!

  45. Have just read the reaction to Paul Lobb being shown the door. The comments are anti Channel 9 decision to axe him. I’ll add myself to that list by changing to another channel. Thanks Paul for your quality & professionalism.

  46. The words, comments, praises of Paul by those before me speak for Newcastle. Just another loss to our towns identity. Shame on everyone who promotes this so called ‘progress’. Best wishes Paul, I fear we will lose you to somewhere who knows your true worth. Thanks for the wonderful smiles and heartfelt news reporting.

    • Wot a wanker.
Obviously you have no idea what quality is.
There has to be one to try to stir the pot, but obviously the positive comments keep on coming and show how much you are totally out of touch with reality.

  47. Perhaps Kylie Blucher needs to explain to Newcastle why Paul Lobb was removed from NBN
My hope is that Paul moves to bigger and better
    Gavin Morris really!!!!

  48. Paul Lobb – professional newsreader and Walkley award-winning journalist. Told he was no longer needed and not given the opportunity to say goodbye to those of us who have enjoyed his newsreading for many years. Obviously management was aware of the backlash this would cause and maybe was hoping that it would fly under the radar, coming up to the holiday season, and that viewers would assume Paul had simply gone on holiday. Paul was one of the best newsreaders on any channel, with a wonderful voice and clear diction – and he knew how to end a story with a light-hearted joke or comment, a talent which unfortunately Natasha does not possess and can be quite cringe-worthy.

Probably to be politically correct, NBN got rid of Paul and kept Natasha, or perhaps it was because he was paid more. The best female newsreader on NBN, in my opinion, is far and away Jane Goldsmith. If the team was to be Paul and Jane I would switch back to NBN, but I’m not holding my breath and will now watch Channel 7 and for comprehensive news – both national and international – SBS.

Gavin has been a weather forecaster for over 15 years and his predictions are usually spot on. Leave him to what he does best.

Good luck, Paul – NBN management obviously does not value talent and professionalism; you would be an asset to any other channel lucky enough to employ you.

  49. Give us all a reason why Mr Paul Lobb was axed. If applicable I shall accept it…if not…look out other channels…here I come. Paul Lobb was a person in my lounge room, who gave trust and won respect from all in the viewing area with the news. Internationally nationally and locally, How can you sack a person for no given reason…….Oh wait a minute!…the “unnecessary” new studios probably cost a huge amount. Someone had to pay. Karma cometh, you’ve lost a massive amount of faithful, loyal viewers. Paul Lobb…Like Mark Ferguson of Ch. 7 will move on to much better and appreciative places. Best wishes Paul, and though things are grim, please try to enjoy Christmas. It’s the worst Christmas gift a person could EVER receive!!!

  50. How sad, after giving his all to NbN. Absolutely no loyalty, NBN should be ashamed of themselves to do this

  51. So everyone’ going to dump NBN for not supporting local news….and switch to stations that haven’t supported local news for years ???

    • I think the person in charge now should Go . Paul & Tash was a great team with Gav doing weather
Bring back our NBN NEWS Annmarie both presents and licl new Not Sydney.
I am turning off the news and going to prime news.

  52. It looks like 7 News will be in this house Having come from getting a poor news coverage, living in Western N.S.W., I have noticed how second rate NBN News has become, since your move and 9 take over. Paul was simply too good and honest for 9.

  53. Obviously loyalta applies in one direction only….such a loss. Used to watch the morning show, but not with Karl, Much ego, little talent. They threw the wrong one out!

  54. Thank you to Paul Lobb you will be missed terribly.A disgraceful way to treat the best news reader N.B.N has had.Kylie Blucher you believe people will embrace this decision you are so wrong. We will no longer watch N.B.N news after decades of watching. To make this decision totally shows no understanding of what Paul Lobb meant to local people.Shame N.B.N.

  55. Gobsmacked. Paul is a welcome visitor in our home every night. Loved and appreciated for his warmth, intelligence and professionalism. A WRONG SO VERY WRONG DECISION and you have robbed our region of our foremost media identity.

  56. This is a disgrace to axe a well loved long serving local news reader. Who by far a much better reader than your next choice. In fact I will now watch an alternative station for news as a 5 to10 minute weather delivery is bearable but 1 hour intolerable BRING BACK PAUL LOBB!!!

  57. Wow what a loss to our local news team. Seems the Corporate boss lady Kylie Blucher is totaly out of touch with her viewers needs. I wonder what Pauls thought were after he was axed by Kylie to read that she had the audacity to refer to Paul as “Lobby” as if he were a dear and valued friend? Shame on you Kylie.

  58. So sad, we have lost a great man who was in touch with the community & beyond. That familiar face most nights to read the News, Paul seemed to be a very caring, honest man, a very welcomed face
    each night.
Please bring him back, whatever the reason.

  59. Disgusting what you have done to Paul Lobb, I wont be watching channel 3 news anymore. Gavin Morris is only a weather man not a professional news reader like Paul. Get real channel 3.

  60. Hierarchy decisions are always made with the dollar sign as a priority which to a point most would understand – in this challenging, sad and uneasy times we have faced over the past 18 months, it was always a pleasure to see a familiar, articulate and well spoken news presenter in Paul Lobb. One can only shake their head and wonder why you would upset the one thing in our viewing pleasure that felt comfortable and reassuring to many in Newcastle and the Hunter. Is this decision like the one made to move operations to Honeysuckle, where NBN have faced many technical difficulties which sadly makes it look like a circus. Going back to the old days of Murray Finlay and Des Hart, a good team who works well, should be kept that way. Maybe giving Lobby opportunities to conduct interviews with local people in the studio as part of his evening role would have meant keeping a legend on the TV and at the same time, giving the viewers something new to appreciate!
If it is the viewers you want to keep happy, why didn’t you send out a survey rather than destroy what is already working….and working well.
Good luck Lobby, keep your chin up legend xx

  61. Instead of axing Paul Lobb why didn’t they look at the back office before making a cost saving decision.
Since moving to their new Hi Tech studios the technical backup has been pathetic.
Sound issues, story fails, just plain stuff ups left, right and centre.
Perhaps we’re cut the wrong person????
Who’s in charge behind the scenes 🤨

  62. Isn’t it sad, when the good get shafted, by those that think they are good so they can tell their managers that they have done good, what a joke. Ever since NBN moved studios audio and vision has been very poor especially when they are getting the feeds for the ‘network’, All regional content is spot on, and that’s the point, regional content and regional people make up a regional station. Take those away and the rating and more so the revenue will drop. Cookie cutter management doesn’t work and will lead to the demise of a what was good Regional station and it’s people. Bring Paul Lobb back and demonstrate that sometimes Management get it wrong, but they listen. Managers that do, shine, and so do their staff and business as a whole.

  63. Cant believe what has happened to Paul and the job given to the weatherman who I cant stand at the best of times. He is certainly no newsreader if the other night was anything to go by and he has no warmth or feeling in his presentation. Another viewer lost.

  64. I started watching NBN news after Prime let Fiona go. I am hearing impaired and I have had & been able to watch, hear & understand NBN news with Paul Lobb speaking – big mistake Hugh. Obviously an issue behind the scenes – just saying.

  65. I was so very shocked and sad to hear that NBN had let Paul Lobb go !!!

He is a genuinely true gentleman!

The news will not be the same without him, I’m afraid.

Actually, I did not like the new format once the news went to the new newsroom in Honeysuckle! Why leave the Mosbri Crescent studio? They were broadcasting from there even before I was born!!!

Everything always comes down to money, doesn’t it? There are so many dickheads on TV which should be axed. But no, they are still there and yet the “powers that be” make a ridiculous decision to remove such a lovely genuine and warmhearted man like Paul Lobb.

It is just amazing and so very lovely to see how many Novocastrians have loved Paul Lobb reading our news!

I agree with them all…..I AM TOTALLY DISGUSTED AT THIS APPALLING DECISION TO REMOVE PAUL !!!

PLEASE BRING BACK PAUL LOBB TO READ OUR NIGHTLY NEWS !!!

  66. Disgusting treatment of an outstanding human being. I’ve switched to channel Seven. I’ll switch back when Lobbie returns.

  67. Where is Paul Lobb???
I moved to the Coffs Coast 7 years ago and immediately followed on with the Channel 9 news (NBN news rooms) I have tuned into the 9 network for the past 50 years and have enjoyed the news readers over the years. Why sack Paul Lobb, a gentleman of the first degree. He was a clear news reader and delivered the nightly news with dignity. Please reinstate this man to h nightly news reading position, thank you

  68. I 💯 agree with everyone, why get rid of Paul Lobb. How disappointing loyalty just does not exist these days!!!

  69. Goldy hasn’t left NBN right?!!!! Just saw her reporting for channel 9 late news.Never watched it before so hope it is just a correspondent type thing ? Thought the Gavin Morris thing must have been a fill in due to illness type thing, talk about a deer stuck in the headlights! This must be the greatest travesty since Big Dog and Friends was axed in the late 80s/early nineties? What on earth is wrong with Natasha and Goldy hosting the news? I would luuuv it!

  70. Please channel 9 dont let go of Gavin the weather presenter on evening news he is the best one out there.

  71. Have only just heard of this and utterly disgusted with management who made this decision. They should be thoroughly ashamed of themselves. Paul Lobb is the consummate professional, great style and a magnificent manner. A person who always was and will be in our home.

His style and attitude reminds me very much of another news presenter now departed to a higher place “Hendo” I am sure another station will take the opportunity to have you on board and our family look forward to welcoming you into our home again.

    Sincerely

Fred “A thoroughly disgusted Central Coastie”
