This three-part documentary features rare archival footage of the incredible rise to fame of the five-piece girl group who became global superstars.
Taking us back to 1994, a time when “ladette culture” was fierce, the series reveals the birth of Britain’s Spice Girls through the lens of those on the inside, including their former manager Chris Herbert, who was arguably the original architect of the group.
We watch their unexpected catapult to stardom, reliving the phenomenon through audition footage and vintage interviews with the girls as they became a worldwide sensation overnight with their first single Wannabe, which hit number one in 37 countries. But becoming the best-selling girl group of all time was no walk in the park as Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Brown, Melanie Chrisholm and Victoria Beckham had to overcome intense scrutiny, sexism and scandal.
Right from the start, through to the group’s demise when Halliwell left in 1998, the story of these outspoken, non-apologetic women is wrapped in nostalgia, with the documentary highlighting the most controversial, empowering and defining moments of their remarkable career.
Twenty-five years on from Spice, their debut album,we will see not only how the Spice Girls influenced a whole generation of women, but how they fit into the world of modern feminism and today’s #Metoo movement.
